Resumen:
As Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) becomes increasingly integrated into higher education, there is a limited understanding of how students perceive this technology and how such perceptions influence learning and the associated systems. This study investigates how students metaphorically conceptualize GenAI, e.g., as a social actor, technique, learning material, or structure, particularly when engaging with a GenAI system designed to enhance intercultural competence, and how these conceptualizations relate to students' reported learning and professionalization-related reflections. Utilizing a triangulation of qualitative methodologies, namely Content Analysis and Grounded Theory,...

Resumen:
Although ChatGPT, a state-of-the-art, large language model, seems to be a disruptive technology in higher education, it is unclear to what extent students rely on this tool for completing different tasks. To address this gap, we asked university students (N = 490) recruited via CloudResearch to rate the extent to which they rely on ChatGPT for completing 13 tasks identified in a previous pilot study. Five distinct profiles emerged: ‘Versatile low reliers’ (38.2%) were characterised by low overall self-reported reliance across the tasks, while ‘all-rounders’ (10.4%) had high overall self-reported reliance. The ‘knowledge seekers’ (16.5%) scored particularly high on tasks such as content...

Resumen:
This study explores the holistic integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, addressing significant gaps in empirical research on AI and EFL. Drawing on existing literature on the ecological views of AI in education, the study conceptualizes holistic integration as a balanced interaction among teachers, students, and AI technologies, enhancing rather than replacing traditional human interactions in pedagogy through mediating teacher-student interactions. The research utilized a mixed-method approach to investigate AI's impact on EFL students' proficiency and perceptions in teacher-led classrooms. 66 Participants from an eastern Chinese city...

Resumen:
Research efficacy is a vital contributor to enhancing research productivity within higher education institutions. Despite its importance, there has been limited focus on understanding this construct and its enablers. This study addresses this gap by exploring research efficacy through the lens of artificial intelligence (AI) utilization among students. The findings reveal that AI utilization has a significant positive impact on various dimensions of research efficacy, including background, review, methodological, analytical, and reporting efficacy. Additionally, review efficacy is shown to significantly influence background, methodological, and reporting efficacy, while it does not impact...

Resumen:
As voice-based Conversational Assistants (CAs), including Alexa, Siri, Google Home, have become commonly embedded in households, many children now routinely interact with Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. It is important to research children's experiences with consumer devices which use AI techniques because these shape their understanding of AI and its capabilities. We conducted a mixed-methods study (questionnaires and interviews) with primary-school children aged 6–11 in Scotland to establish children's understanding of how voice-based CAs work, how they perceive their cognitive abilities, agency and other human-like qualities, their awareness and trust of privacy aspects when using...

Attitudes can constitute barriers to engineering, computing, and artificial intelligence (AI) enculturation, contributing to and resulting from digital inequity. Building upon research on computational thinking privilege, we explored first-year students' (a) perceived future impact of AI on their career prospects and (b) backgrounds (e.g., gender, underrepresented minority (URM) status, and First-Generation status) associated with their attitudes toward AI, computational thinking, and course performance. Computational thinking was measured using our newly validated Engineering Computational Thinking Diagnostic (ECTD), while course performance was assessed based on final grades in an...

Resumen:
The use of video and paper-based materials is commonly widespread in foreign language learning (FLL). It is well established that the level of acceptance of these materials influences learning outcomes, but there is lack of evidence regarding the use and related impact of videos generated by artificial intelligence (AI) on these aspects. This paper used linear mixed models and path analysis to investigate the influence of student acceptance of AI-generated short videos on learning outcomes compared to paper-based materials. Student acceptance was assessed based on perceived ease of use (PEU), perceived usefulness (PU), attitude (A), intentions (I), and concentration (C). The results...

Resumen:
This study examined and categorized the views of students and teachers in Philippine Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and correlated those with similar patterns of views regarding ChatGPT usage. While previous studies explored ChatGPT's risks and benefits, a significant gap remains in understanding how college students and educators perceive this technology for its culturally relevant and equitable integration into teaching and learning. Using Q-Methodology, 27 participants (15 students and 12 professors) were surveyed, interviewed, and invited to rank-order 36 statements about using ChatGPT. Three factors emerged from using factor analysis: Ethical Tech Guardians, Balanced Pedagogy...
