Pre-service teachers’ beliefs about second language pronunciation teaching, their experience, and speech assessments
Aki Tsunemoto, Pavel Trofimovich, Sara Kennedy (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Teacher cognition has attracted increased attention among second language (L2) researchers and practitioners, likely because of its potential consequences for classroom practices, such as teaching and assessment. Prior research has revealed links between teacher beliefs about pronunciation teaching and teachers’ own experience (e.g. amount of teacher training and teaching experience). However, no research has to date focused on how teachers’ experience and their beliefs are intertwined, possibly affecting teacher assessments of L2 speakers’ pronunciation. For this study, 77 Japanese pre-service teachers of English completed an online questionnaire examining their beliefs about the teaching of English pronunciation and eliciting details about their L2 teaching and learning experience. Additionally, pre-service teachers assessed 40...

Control-value appraisals, academic emotions, and student engagement: A case of Chinese EFL undergraduates
Jinfen Xu, Jiaqi Yang, Dengke He (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Student engagement has long been recognized as a vital predictor of academic success, but how it associates with control-value appraisals and academic emotions of Chinese undergraduates of English as a foreign language (EFL) is underexplored. This article hence invoked the control-value theory and investigated the general profile of Chinese undergraduates’ control-value appraisals, academic emotions and student engagement in English learning, and the interrelationships between the three constructs. Descriptive statistics of the questionnaire data revealed that the 323 undergraduate participants generally showed a moderate level of control-value appraisals and engagement in English learning; furthermore, they experienced a variety of academic emotions, with positive emotions as more frequently experienced than negative ones....

Who am I when I teach with technology? Exploring language teacher identity and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)
Li Ruyang, Ye Hedi (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: identidad

Resumen:

This study examines how language teacher identity shapes technology integration through the lens of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge-language teacher identity framework. A mixed-methods design was employed, involving survey data from 320 university foreign-language teachers and qualitative data from interviews, observations, and journals with 30 participants. Quantitative results showed that pedagogical beliefs and self-efficacy significantly predicted Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge levels. Qualitative findings revealed that identity conflicts, especially tensions between traditional roles and innovation demands, often constrained technology use, despite high confidence or competence. By foregrounding identity as a mediating mechanism, the study positions the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge-...

Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita

Resumen:

Although second language (L2) engagement has received increasing attention, L2 writing engagement has been rarely investigated. Based on the social-cognitive theory, environmental sources could influence individuals’ motivations which in turn affect their engagement. However, factors contributing to L2 writing engagement have not been thoroughly understood. The present study investigated the associations between three dimensions of classroom environment (teacher support, student cohesion, and task orientation) and L2 writing engagement as well as the mediation roles of mastery and performance approach goals among 721 Chinese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). Structural equation model analysis suggested that task orientation was the most influential environmental factor; it could not only directly influence EFL writing...

Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This study explores the development of intercultural competence among English as a foreign language (EFL) learners through critical incident task discussions. Participants included 72 intermediate-level students in a control group and 69 in an experimental group. Both groups completed a presurvey on intercultural competence, whereas the experimental group additionally engaged in weekly critical incident discussions and submitted their reflections. At the end of the intervention, both groups completed a postsurvey, and the experimental group provided open-ended responses about their experiences. Results revealed significant gains in intercultural competence for the experimental group, with no comparable improvement in the control group. Learners reported increased awareness of cultural values, norms, and differences, recognition of...

Zainab Alsuhaibani (2022)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This study investigated the effect of consciousness-raising instruction and corpus-based instruction on EFL (English as a foreign language) students’ development of compliment responses. It employed a quasi-experimental design with 136 EFL university students divided between three groups: control, consciousness-raising, and corpus groups. A discourse completion test (DCT) was used as a pre- and post-test with all the groups to investigate any significant differences between them. Further, a questionnaire with open-ended questions was used to explore students’ perceptions of pragmatic instruction of compliment responses. The results showed the effectiveness of pragmatic instruction of compliment responses through both consciousness-raising instruction and corpus- based instruction. More specifically, significant differences were found...

Examining the perceptions and self-reported practices of L2 teachers in China regarding oral fluency: A conceptual replication and extension
Qiao Gan, Lin Ma (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión oral

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study, a partial replication of Tavakoli and Hunter, examined the perceptions and self-reported practices of 72 second language (L2) teachers of English or Japanese in China regarding oral fluency. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data through questionnaires and interviews. The findings aligned with the original study conducted in the UK, suggesting that L2 teachers in China often viewed fluency as encompassing speaking ability in a broad sense. Therefore, these teachers reported a large majority of free production tasks that enhanced speaking ability, rather than specifically focusing on fluency development. Collectively, these...

A skill-specific perspective on AI-mediated informal digital learning of English (AI-IDLE): Examining the contributing roles of L2 writing motivation and enjoyment
Minlin Zou, Ali Soyoof, Mark Feng Teng (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Artificial intelligence-mediated informal digital learning of English (AI-IDLE) is emerging as a promising field in computer-assisted language learning (CALL). This study asserts a need to adopt a skill-specific (e.g., writing) perspective to examine the unique challenges and psychological mechanisms associated with second language (L2) writing. Drawing upon the theoretical concepts of L2 writing future selves (i.e., the ideal L2 writing self and the ought-to L2 writing self) and L2 writing enjoyment, this study seeks to investigate the motivational and affective basis of AI-IDLE writing (AI-IDLE-W). We collected questionnaire data from 412 Chinese university students and conducted postsurvey interviews with 12 of them. The quantitative findings demonstrated that both the ideal L2 writing self and the ought-to L2 writing self can...

Interrupting the Loop: EFL Teacher–Learner (De)motivation During Critical Incidents
Lisa Mynhardt (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

Motivation in language classrooms is often treated as an individual trait, yet periods of disruption reveal how strongly it is shaped through interaction. This study examines how learner and teacher (de)motivation was experienced and enacted during the return to offline English as a foreign language instruction following pandemic-related disruption. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, data were collected from learner and teacher questionnaires, regression analyses, Motivational Identity System-informed domain mapping, and teacher observational accounts. Findings indicate that learners maintained interest in English learning while experiencing moderate cognitive–emotional demotivational strain, suggesting vulnerability rather than pervasive demotivation. In contrast, teachers reported cumulative demotivational pressure arising...

Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes

Resumen:

This study examined changes in undergraduate students’ language mindsets and academic writing competence as a result of taking a one-semester English for academic purposes (EAP) writing course with a pre–post intervention on mindset. A total of 319 students participated in the study and completed a 10-week EAP course. The participants were administered the mindset questionnaire and the writing test at two different time-points. The results showed that the participants’ level in one component of growth language mindset (general language intelligence beliefs), and scores on the writing test increased significantly. The results of the latent profile analysis revealed three distinctive profiles among the participants at both time-points: Growth profile, Mixed profile, and Fixed profile. The Growth and Mixed profiles were found to perform...
