Resumen:
This study set out to investigate the relationship between L2 vocabulary knowledge (VK) and second-language (L2) reading/listening comprehension. More than 100 individual studies were included in this meta-analysis, which generated 276 effect sizes from a sample of almost 21,000 learners. The current meta-analysis had several major findings. First, the overall correlation between VK and L2 reading comprehension was .57 ( p .01) and that between VK and L2 listening was .56 ( p .01). If the attenuation effect due to reliability of measures was taken into consideration, the ‘true’ correlation between VK and L2 reading/listening comprehension may likely fall within the range of .56–.67, accounting for 31%–45% variance in L2 comprehension. Second, all three mastery levels of form–meaning knowledge (meaning recognition, meaning recall,...

Resumen:
Research has consistently demonstrated that parental involvement plays a key role in children’s early second language (L2) development. However, little is known about how different aspects of parental involvement in children’s L2 learning are configured and how these differentiated combinations of parental involvement are associated with children’s L2 motivation and engagement. Moving beyond prior studies, which typically focused on the effects of single aspects of parental involvement, this study utilized a person-centered approach to examine the configuration patterns of various indicators of parental involvement in children’s L2 learning (i.e. parental autonomy support, psychological control, and behavioral control). Data were collected from a sample of 702 seventh graders ( Mage = 13.09, SD = 1.64; 50.14% girls) in two major...

Resumen:
The promotion of language learner autonomy has been recognized as being beneficial in various domains, from linguistic achievement to personal growth. Key to the development of learner autonomy is shifting control from the teacher to the learner. While much has been written about the construct of learner control, there has been little close examination of the practices with which language teachers release their command. This article reports on a study conducted in a Chinese private school intent on promoting learner autonomy, and explores ways in which teachers’ practices facilitated or hindered control shift and their perceptions of these actions. From a study of nine teachers within one English department, two case studies are explored in depth through analysis of classroom practices, interviews and post-lesson discussions. While...

Resumen:
This study examined how timing influences writing behaviors and associated cognitive activities in second language users during computer-assisted collaborative writing and whether task complexity mediates this relationship. The study involved 56 Chinese participants with English proficiency levels at CEFR B2 and C1. They were randomly arranged into 28 pairs. Each pair completed two counterbalanced writing tasks in a reading-to-write format, differing in cognitive complexity. The simple task version involved summarizing a single text, whereas the complex task version required writing a summary of three texts. Keystroke logging software tracked the participants’ typing behaviors during the tasks....

Resumen:
In spite of the superior effects of semester- or year-long educational experiences abroad, the majority of students prefers short-term study abroad for which participation numbers are steadily rising. Due to the increased student interest in short-term study abroad options, investigations into how a short stay abroad can be designed to maximize learning outcomes for participants are important. While some studies suggest that technology can have negative impacts on language learning during study abroad, effective inclusion of technology can maximize learning. This article summarizes the results of three years of research investigating the effects of daily online journaling during an intensive German summer program on second language (L2) learners’ writing skills during an intensive German summer program. The context of the program will...

Resumen:
This study investigates the effects of generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) generated vs. human-written moral dilemma stories on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ speaking skills, storytelling ability, and behavioral regulation, framed within the theoretical context of embodied cognition. A total of 120 university students were divided into two groups: the experimental group, which engaged with GPT-generated moral dilemma stories, and the control group, which worked with human-authored moral dilemma stories. Over an 11-week experimental period (including pre-test, 10-week intervention, and post-test), each group was exposed to weekly dilemma stories, followed by speaking assessments using IELTS Part 2 tasks. Analysis of covariance results demonstrated that the GPT group significantly outperformed the control group in...

Resumen:
In today’s society, marked by the spread of Covid-19 that forced the shift from a traditional face-to-face to a fully online setting, digital tools are becoming more and more essential to engage 21 st Century students in their classroom activities. In the context of ELT (English Language Teaching), Digital Game-Based Language Learning (DGBLL) has increasingly been shown to foster language development since its interactivity allows for the creation of a constructivist learning environment in which students do not experience feelings of stress and anxiety. This article aims to present the design, development, and testing of an original class-interactive storytelling game addressing EFL (English as a Foreign Language) Italian Secondary School students. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected and submitted to statistical and...

Resumen:
In the contemporary educational landscape, the interplay between customary and online classrooms has created a dynamic space for teacher–student interaction. This study examined spoken discourse by comparing the use of proximity and interaction strategies in customary and online English-as-a-foreign-language classrooms. Drawing on Hyland’s proximity model—comprising organization, argument structure, credibility, stance, and engagement—the study explored how these dimensions were realized in instructional interaction. Data were drawn from 30 recorded classes at Payame Noor University, including 15 customary classes and 15 online classes. Following transcription, the frequency of proximity and interaction features in each instructional mode was quantified. The findings suggested differences between the two modalities. Instructors in...

Resumen:
Learning about the factors that play a positive or negative role in language teachers’ dissatisfaction, stress and exhaustion, and challenge their identity as a teacher might provide teaching programs with suggestions on how to prevent teacher burnout. This study investigated whether teachers’ mindsets about stability or malleability of teaching ability (fixed and growth mindsets) and self-efficacy predicted their burnout and professional identity beliefs. The participants of the present study were 166 English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers. The teachers completed self-report scales on teaching mindsets, burnout, professional identity, and self-efficacy. The results of path analysis showed that fixed teaching mindsets productively predicted emotional exhaustion and depersonalization while growth teaching mindsets and teacher...

Resumen:
This qualitative case study explores how English as a foreign language (EFL) student teachers engaged with generative artificial intelligence (GAI) in the collaborative design of digital stories within an advanced undergraduate course in 2024. During the semester, participants critically evaluated and applied various AI applications, such as text-to-image generators, automated video editors and speech synthesis tools, to support different stages of multimodal story production, including script drafting, visual design, audio narration and video editing. Drawing on a corpus of 69 reflective papers (approximately 75,000 words), the study examines how student teachers integrated visual, auditory and textual elements to achieve multimodal cohesion and narrative coherence. The analysis focuses on participants’ practices and strategies for...
