The effect of collaborative writing in an EFL secondary setting
Izaskun Villarreal, Nora Gil-Sarratea (2020)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aprendizaje colaborativo

Resumen:

Collaborative writing (CW) has been proven advantageous to enhance the second and foreign language skills of university students. However, little research to date has explored whether CW practices are fruitful for secondary school learners in foreign language (FL) contexts, a population characterized by low language proficiency levels, and few opportunities to engage with the FL. The present classroom-based study examines CW in this setting and aims to determine whether CW fosters language opportunities, operationalized as language-related episodes (LREs), which will allow learners in low-input scenarios to compose better texts. Two parallel intact classes were studied: a control group (n = 16) which produced an argumentative essay individually, and an experimental group (n = 16) which did so in pairs while recording their...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación

Resumen:

Research on group dynamic assessment has predominantly focused on whole-class mediation, with limited attention given to alternative formats such as in smaller groups. Grounded in sociocultural theory, the present study explored how a small-group online dynamic assessment using video conferencing (i.e., Zoom) and Google Docs enhanced the English academic writing abilities of university-level second language (L2) learners. Twelve students in an intermediate academic writing course were divided into four groups, each consisting of three to four students. An adjusted cumulative group dynamic assessment approach was implemented over three week cycles. The analysis examined both quantitative and qualitative changes in teacher mediation and student responsiveness, as observed in relevant episodes both within and across sessions. For the...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

In the current study, we aimed to investigate an Iranian English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher’s cognitions about second language (L2) writing and feedback. Using longitudinal data from a writing instructor (i.e. Moe) over the course of eight years, we examined data from three rounds of interviews (i.e. in 2013, 2016, and 2021), stimulated recalls (i.e. in 2016 and 2021), and textual analysis of students’ essays with Moe’s feedback on them. We also employed a sociocultural-theory-driven approach to analysing these data in order to gain an understanding of the genesis, development, and mediation in his cognitions. Our analysis showed that Moe’s cognitions about L2 writing and feedback developed in a nonlinear fashion. For instance, his feedback provision developed from comprehensive grammar correction into selective grammar...

Scaffolding student engagement with written corrective feedback: Transforming feedback sessions into learning affordances
Chi-Duc Nguyen (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

This study proposed a three-step writing conference in which foreign/second language (L2) students, under the guidance of their writing instructor, first fastened their attentional focus on a form-related error, analysed a collection of standard L2 samples to deduce the underlying knowledge, and then planned for their error correction as well as future learning of this knowledge. The ultimate goal of this formative assessment practice was to scaffold student engagement with written corrective feedback (WCF). Using a between-group experiment design, the present study compared the effects on the success rate of error correction and L2 uptake of the above writing conference (n = 14) against those brought about by a typical Teacher–Student (n = 12) and a typical Student–Student one (n = 12). Research participants were 38 intermediate...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

The lack of individualized feedback may lead foreign language educators to think about giving feedback using a variety of artificial intelligence powered (AI-powered) tools, increasing access to automated assessment systems. Furthermore, metacognitive scaffolding guides students in planning, reflecting, monitoring, and assessing their language progress which can be adaptive through AI-driven tools like grammarly and write & improve that alter feedback. The purpose of this study is to investigate how AI-enhanced adaptive scaffolding delivered through automated feedback prompts and reflective questions can improve English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ writing performance and self-regulatory engagement. Along with a self-report questionnaire, the study used a quantitative approach with experimental design. The study sample...

Dynamic assessment of L2 argumentative writing: Understanding the effectiveness of ZPD-based instructional enrichment
Lu Yu, Matthew E Poehner (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación

Resumen:

Texto completo

Argumentative writing has long been recognized as challenging for English second language (L2) writers yet central to their academic success in educational settings. This article investigates the effectiveness of a writing instructional enrichment program informed by diagnoses from dynamic assessment (DA) in promoting L2 learners’ argumentative writing abilities. Grounded in Vygotskian Sociocultural Theory, DA introduces mediation into the assessment procedure, so that learner emerging abilities are diagnosed through observing their responsiveness to mediation when difficulties arise. In this study, prior to and following the instructional programs, a three-step, interactionist DA procedure was...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: juegos

Resumen:

Promoting English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ reading comprehension, improving their reading motivation, and reducing their anxiety have always been the focus of EFL researchers. Educational board games have gradually received attention from educators. Various studies have found that board game-based teaching can improve students’ learning performance, motivation, and classroom engagement, and contribute to increasing discussion. However, there are few discussions on board games in the field of EFL, so further discussion is necessary to fill the research gap of board games in EFL reading comprehension. This study developed a dual-hierarchical scaffolding board game activity framework integrating game-based learning (GBL) and scaffolding strategies, and used card board games as teaching materials to promote EFL students’...

Exploring teacher scaffolding in a CLIL-framed EFL intensive reading class: A classroom discourse analysis approach
Dongying Li, Lian Zhang (2022)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Teacher scaffolding plays a crucial role in shaping the quality of classroom learning, yet little is known about the effective features of scaffolding in classes using content language integrated learning (CLIL), especially in terms of its effects on learners’ language and cognitive development. To address this issue, the study adopts a classroom discourse analysis approach to capture features of effective teacher scaffolding in a CLIL-framed intensive reading class. Results showed a perceived increase in learners’ language and cognitive abilities while also revealing a series of effective teacher scaffolding strategies in CLIL. These include frequent use of dialogic inquiry and incidental feedback in discourse extensions, and the variation of teacher scaffolding strategies in response to students’ learning needs. The findings will...

Scaffolding English scientific materials through genre analysis in the CLIL context
Jun-Jie Tseng, Fang-Yuh Lo, Chien-Rong Lu (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: AICLE/CLIL

Resumen:

Previous studies have recommended employing genre analysis as a supportive framework for English scientific content in the content and language integrated learning (CLIL) context. However, little is known about how CLIL teachers collaborate to co-create genre-based scaffolds and how they perceive the benefits and challenges of genre analysis for material development through interdisciplinary teacher collaborations. This study aims to fill these gaps by exploring how two physics teachers and two English teachers paired to co-create scaffolds to improve students’ comprehension of English scientific materials. This study also investigates the teachers’ perceptions of their genre-based scaffolding design experiences via interdisciplinary teacher collaborations. This study is a qualitative case study, collecting data from scaffolds in...

‘Definitions did not effectively help my students’: Pre-service teachers’ language modification strategies in Thai language-driven CLIL classrooms
Nutthida Tachaiyaphum, Laura Gurney, Nicola Daly (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: AICLE/CLIL

Resumen:

Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) requires a synthesis of language and content teaching. However, language teachers who are employed to teach CLIL may lack the preparation and knowledge to teach other curriculum subjects. It is therefore necessary to understand how language CLIL teachers make subject-specific language comprehensible to students when they themselves are unfamiliar with subject-specific terms and concepts. However, no research has yet been conducted to explore this in the Thai context. To address this gap, this article presents the findings of a qualitative study exploring pre-service teachers’ use of language modification as negotiation of meaning (NoM) strategies to make accessible subject-specific terms or concepts in the target language to students. Data are drawn from language-driven CLIL classroom...
