Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Texto completo

Peer feedback has been proposed as a way to boost student feedback literacy and learners’ evaluative judgment. However, the notion of peer feedback and its related processes present numerous challenges for teachers and learners. By adopting the principles of Exploratory Practice with my undergraduates studying academic and business English, I explored why my learners did not seem to view peer feedback as worthwhile, unpacking their attitudes and beliefs in this area of practice using both traditional surveys and the idea of classroom meta-dialogues. I attempted to develop evaluative judgment skills and proactive recipience by tailoring peer feedback processes around oral presentations, a central...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

Major advances have been made in understanding language learning strategies (LLS). However, rapid changes in human interaction induced by the internet and web 2.0 warrant a re-assessment of LLS in today’s context, especially vis-à-vis digital nativeness. Therefore, a large-scale quantitative investigation involving 891 college students was conducted. Their LLS use patterns and frequency and their level of digital fluency were examined using two instruments: Oxford’s Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) and Teo’s Digital Natives Assessment Scale (DNAS). The participants reported moderate usage of all the strategies described in SILL. However, they reported using specific SILL categories (compensation, memory, and metacognitive) more frequently than others (social, cognitive, and affective). Participants with different levels...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Resumen:

Grounded in Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi’s Three Pillars Theory, this study investigated the influence of foreign language enjoyment, growth language mindset, and classroom environment on the willingness to communicate in the context of learning Chinese as a second language (CSL). Despite the rapid global growth of Chinese learning communities in recent decades, the effect of these positive individual and contextual factors within CSL settings remains largely underexplored. To bridge this gap, the study conducted path analysis on data collected from 207 linguistically and culturally diverse CSL learners in China. The results showed that foreign language enjoyment not only directly enhanced students’ willingness to communicate in Chinese, but also exerted an indirect effect through the chain mediating process of growth language...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Although second language (L2) emotions have been intensively investigated in the recent decade, little attention has been paid to how L2 learners regulate their L2 learning emotions. It also remains unknown how different combinations of emotion regulation strategies (ERS) relate to learners’ regulatory emotional self-efficacy (RESE) beliefs and L2 burnout. The current study recruited 777 Chinese undergraduates of English as a foreign language (EFL) by administering a battery of questionnaires. Latent profile analysis indicated that three distinct groups of learners emerged, namely the Adaptive Group (40.5%), the High ERS Group (6.8%), and the Maladaptive Group (52.7%). Three-step Bolck–Croon–Hagenaars (BCH) analysis revealed distinct group differences in RESE and burnout. The Maladaptive Group reported the lowest levels on both RESE...

Resumen:

This study aims to explore the impact of oral corrective feedback types on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ willingness to communicate across proficiency levels. It also investigates how EFL learners view different types of feedback in relation to their willingness to communicate. Sixty Iranian EFL learners were tracked in four proficiency levels. Initially, the participants filled in a questionnaire to measure their attitudes to oral CF and their willingness to communicate. Subsequent to the teachers’ employment of explicit correction, recasts, and prompts, the learners’ willingness to communicate was measured anew. A semi-structured interview was also conducted. The results revealed learners’ high preference for prompts. A two-way mixed between-within ANOVA demonstrated a significant effect for both oral corrective...

Resumen:

With the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) tools available to anybody with internet access, English language learners are increasingly turning to these resources to improve their writing skills. By examining their utilization of AI tools to improve their writing proficiency, this research examines the perspectives of Turkish English language learners enrolled in a preparatory program at a state university in Istanbul. Using a Q methodological approach, researchers created a set of 40 statements based on a literature study, which were then sent to 55 consenting individuals. Qualitative information was also collected by interviewing five students in depth. The analysis indicated a growing tendency among students to utilize AI tools for writing assignments, highlighting advantages such as assistance in translation, idea generation,...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: profesorado

Resumen:

Recent reviews of the application of positive psychology (PP) in language education have identified a theoretical debate, the efficacy of PP interventions, and the nexus between culture and PP interventions as the three main underexplored issues. Furthermore, the need for PP to broaden its scope to include language teachers has been highlighted in the relevant body of literature. In response to these lacunae, the current explanatory sequential mixed-methods study examined the interplay of self-efficacy, self-concept, and motivation among 286 Iranian language teachers, who were recruited through proportionate stratified random sampling, to test the validity of the E4MC (empathy, emotions, emotional intelligence, engagement [E4], motivation [M], and character strengths [C]) model of PP. Subsequently, a qualitative phase was designed in...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

This study examines a potential tension in the application of self-determination theory to an extensive reading-enhanced speaking course in an English-as-a-foreign-language context. Although extensive reading is widely assumed to foster autonomous motivation by satisfying learners’ basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, its implementation within formal instructional settings often involves mandatory reading quotas and graded components that may introduce controlling pressures. Drawing on data from 142 Japanese university English majors enrolled in a year-long extensive reading-integrated speaking course, this study investigated changes in motivational regulation and basic psychological needs satisfaction using Bayesian analyses. Results revealed strong evidence for increases in all three basic...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

This study set out to scrutinize the interplay between 338 (218 male and 120 female) English as a second or foreign language learners’ second language writing boredom (L2WB) and boredom coping strategies, along with the mediating role of second language writing motivation (L2WM). Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis indicated that L2WB is negatively associated with L2WM in writing classes. Results also revealed a negative relationship between L2WB and cognitive as well as behavioral approaches to coping with boredom in second language (L2) writing practices. In addition, L2WM was positively predictive of cognitive approach strategy while being negatively predictive of cognitive avoidance strategy in coping with boredom. Results also showed significant indirect effects of L2WB on both cognitive-oriented strategies (i.e....

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

To contribute to the discourse on ways to revitalize world language education, this study explored, through the lens of program evaluation, the effect of academic and nonacademic relationships on language majors’ choice of their major, their other motivations, and the nature of career-related knowledge and experiences they value. To this end, the study used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, including a web-based survey ( N = 80) and group interviews (n = 12). Participants were undergraduate students enrolled in a modern language program and joint-degree programs in language + business and language + health. Analysis revealed statistically significant differences among the three groups of students in the influence of college professors on their major choice, the reasons for choosing their major, and the types of desired...
