Exploring repeated captioning viewing as a way to promote vocabulary learning: time lag between repetitions and learner factors
Carmen Muñoz, Anastasia Pattemore, Daniela Avello (2022)
Computer Assisted Language Learning
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: materiales audiovisuales

Resumen:

Repeated viewing of the same video is a common strategy among autonomous language learners as well as a much used pedagogical strategy among foreign language (FL) teachers. Learners may watch the same video more than once, to increase global comprehension of the target language or to focus their attention on linguistic aspects, such as new vocabulary or pronunciation. This study sought to examine to what extent repetition is more efficient for vocabulary learning if the second viewing follows the first immediately, or a week later. Participants were upper intermediate-level college learners who were distributed into three groups, one watched a TV series episode twice in the same session, one also watched the same episode twice but one week apart, and the last (control) group did not watch the video. Tests of word meaning recognition...

Indigenous America in the Spanish Language Classroom
Anne Fountain (2023)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: enseñanza de ELE

Resumen:

Although Indigenous peoples are active citizens of the Americas, many Spanish language teachers lack the knowledge and understanding of their history, culture, and languages that is needed to present the Spanish language in context. By presenting a more complete picture of the Spanish speaking world, Indigenous America in the Spanish Language Classroom invites teachers to adjust their curricula to create a more inclusive classroom.

Anne Fountain provides teachers with key historical and cultural information about Indigenous peoples throughout the Americas and explains how to incorporate relevant resources into their curricula using a social justice lens. This book begins with an overview of the Iberian impact on Indigenous Americans and connects it to language teaching, giving practical ideas that are tied to language learning...

Does grammar matter…
Andreea S. Calude (2016)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: presentación

Temas: gramática

Resumen:

It can be hard sometimes, when speaking, to remember all of the grammatical rules that guide us when we're writing. When is it right to say "the dog and me" and when should it be "the dog and I"? Does it even matter? Andreea S. Calude dives into the age-old argument between linguistic prescriptivists and descriptivists who have two very different opinions on the matter.

Does L2 assessment make a difference? Testing the empirical validity of applied cognitive linguistics in the acquisition of the Spanish/L2 psych-verb construction
Beatriz Martín-Gascón, Reyes Llopis-García, Irene Alonso-Aparicio (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: lingüística cognitiva

Resumen:

This article lies within the field of applied cognitive linguistics (ACL) and presents empirical work that addresses overlooked effects of assessment typology in second language (L2) learning. It examines whether pairing a cognitive instructional approach with matching assessment design results in greater learning outcomes over the more pervasive notional-functional approaches. The last two decades have witnessed a proliferation of empirical research measuring the effectiveness of ACL-based teaching approaches, yet studies have only been partly fruitful in eliciting data that truly favors ACL. We argue that this is largely due to assessment design, which typically measures performance via correct vs. incorrect tasks. To overcome this caveat, two studies addressing the complex Spanish psych-verb construction (e.g. gustar "to like")...

TPACK in the age of ChatGPT and Generative AI
Punya Mishra, Melissa Warr, Rezwana Islam (2023)
Journal of Digital Learning in Teacher Education
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

The educational impact of Generative AI (GenAI) technologies, such as ChatGPT, has received significant attention. We use the TPACK framework to discuss the types of knowledge teachers require to effectively use GenAI tools. We highlight the qualities of GenAI that make it like other digital technologies (they are protean, opaque, and unstable) as well as qualities that make it revolutionary (namely, they are generative and social). We describe how these traits affect specific knowledge domains (TK, TPK, TCK, XK, and TPACK) and explore implications for educators. Finally, we argue for a more expansive description of Contextual Knowledge (XK), going beyond the immediate context to include...

Language Evolution Over the Lifespan: Experimental Approach to Lexical Richness in Spanish
Francisco Moreno-Fernández (2023)
Roczniki Humanistyczne
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: vocabulario

Resumen:

Texto completo

This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge of linguistic change over the lifespan by means of panel studies. The analysis offered presents two elements that have received little treatment within the field. On the one hand, the analysis is interested in the evolution or development of the lexicon in dialogical speech; on the other hand, the analysis is carried out on material from a panel study on the Spanish language. This text analyzes the evolution of lexical richness by means of an exploratory panel study based on semi-guided interviews carried out in Madrid, a Spanish city included in the framework of the international PRESEEA project.

The interplay between corrective feedback timing and foreign language anxiety in L2 development
Ehsan Rassaei (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

Recent research indicated the effectiveness of immediate and delayed corrective feedback (CF) on second language (L2) learning. What is little known is the moderating effects of learner individual factors such as foreign language anxiety (FLA) on the efficacy of immediate and delayed CF. The primary aim of the present study is thus to investigate if learners? FLA can moderate the effectiveness of immediate and delayed feedback. To this end, 82 learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) were randomly assigned to two treatment conditions as well as a control group. During three treatment sessions, the participants performed storytelling tasks in groups of four and received either immediate or delayed metalinguistic feedback for the errors they made. Regarding the immediate feedback condition, each participant received...

Testing Aptitude: Investigating Meara's (2005) LLAMA tests
Vivienne Rogers, Paul Meara, Rachel Aspinall (2016)
EUROSLA Yearbook
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación

Resumen:

Texto completo

Paul Meara developed the LLAMA tests as a free, language-neutral, user-friendly suite of aptitude tests incorporating four separate elements: vocabulary learning (LLAMA_B), phonetic (implicit) memory (LLAMA_D), sound-symbol correspondence (LLAMA_E) and grammatical inferencing (LLAMA_F) based on the standardised MLAT tests (Carroll & Sapon, 1959). Recently, they have become increasingly popular in L2 acquisition research. However, Meara has expressed concern about the wide use of these tests without validity testing. We investigated several areas relating to the LLAMA tests.
1. What is the role of gender in LLAMA test performance…
2. Are the LLAMA tests...
