Social justice pedagogies (SJPs) are increasingly common in world language (WL) classrooms. However, little is known about how these activities unfold in real time. This qualitative, observational, and exploratory study adopts a multimodal, microanalytic lens to examine the enactment of an in-class social justice (SJ) activity involving four learners in a postsecondary second language Spanish course in the U.S. Using video data, the study draws on Sociocognitive Theory and Multimodal Interaction Analysis to pursue two goals: (1) to investigate whether learners enacted the SJ activity in ways consistent with both the activity's instructions and broader SJPs, and (2) to explore whether and how language learning emerges within this interaction.
