Redesigning an AI bill of rights with/for young people: Principles for exploring AI ethics with middle and high school students
Sarah K. Burriss, Nicole Hutchins, Zachary Conley (2024)

Resumen:

Texto completo

“AI ethics” has become a popular term for signaling concerns with the development and application of artificial intelligence, and a hot-button issue in both academic and public discourse. The current work tends to center adult-oriented, adult-generated, and issues-based conceptions of ethics. This paper reports on an alternative model for “doing ethics” via co-design with young people, highlighting the need for students to engage in AI ethics work, especially as AI is increasingly used in their education and social lives. In particular, we focus on developing a rights-based approach, using the White House Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights as a starting point for redesigning core AI ethics...

Agentivism: a learning theory for the age of artificial intelligence

Learning theories have historically changed when the conditions of learning evolved. Generative and agentic AI create a new condition by allowing learners to delegate explanation, writing, problem solving, and other cognitive work to systems that can generate, recommend, and sometimes act on the learner’s behalf. This creates a fundamental challenge for learning theory: successful performance can no longer be assumed to indicate learning. Learners may complete tasks effectively with AI support while developing less understanding, weaker judgment, and limited transferable capability. We argue that this problem is not fully captured by existing learning theories. Behaviourism, cognitivism,...

Resumen:

Texto completo

Artificial intelligence literacy is a concept that has been the focus of exhaustive research recently. However, there are very few psychometrically sound and thoroughly evaluated instruments that attempt to assess AI literacy in a valid way. Therefore, this study presents an item set to assess the AI literacy of non-experts. In the context of a Delphi expert study, 53 subject matter experts participated in three iterative questionnaire rounds to generate potential AI literacy items and assess their content validity. In addition, the experts made suggestions on how the items’ wording accuracy could be improved and evaluated the wording suggestions of the other experts. Of 47...

Algorithm appreciation or aversion? Comparing in-service and pre-service teachers’ acceptance of computerized expert models
Esther Kaufmann (2021)

Metodología: estudio empírico

Resumen:

Texto completo

Although computerized expert models (i.e., algorithms) could improve educational decisions and judgments, initial research has demonstrated that teachers, like other professional groups, tend to be “algorithm averse.” In the current study, we use behavioral and questionnaire data to examine the extent to which in-service and pre-service (i.e., students in training to become) teachers accept advice from expert models and investigate how teachers' acceptance of expert models could be improved. Although it is often presumed that younger generations are less algorithm averse, we demonstrate that both in-service and pre-service teachers prefer advice from a human source (school counselor) than...

Multimodal video analysis is a complex and time-consuming process for a researcher; it entails capturing, watching, and re-watching video data to identify which segments best inform or address the questions that drive the research. Modern AI applications can alleviate the challenges that arise during the fine-grained analysis of learners' multimodal interactions captured through video. In this study, we present a supervised approach to training a deep neural network to analyze children's computational thinking (CT) captured through multimodal video data. The approach first uses a set of images extracted from video data to train the AI to map them to labels generated using a priori theory....

Resumen:

In the realm of education, crafting appropriate questions for examinations is a meticulous and time-consuming task that is crucial for assessing students' understanding of the subject matter. This paper explores the potential of leveraging large language models (LLMs) to automate question generation in the educational domain. Specifically, we focus on generating educational questions from contexts extracted from school-level textbooks. Our study aims to prompt LLMs such as GPT-4 Turbo, GPT-3.5 Turbo, Llama-2-70B, Llama-3.1-405B, and Gemini Pro to generate a complete set of questions for each context, potentially streamlining the question generation process for educators. We performed a...

Exploring the “what” and “how” of opportunities and challenges of AI in EFL teacher education

Resumen:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly impacted second language education, including English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching and learning. Although various studies have been conducted to examine the opportunities and challenges of AI in EFL teaching and learning, comparable work on the opportunities and challenges of AI in EFL teacher education is limited. This study aimed to explore the “what” and “how” of opportunities and challenges of AI in EFL teacher education. To that end, we used descriptive narrative design in which we collected autobiographical narratives and conducted semi-structured interviews with 35 EFL teachers, four EFL teacher educators, and four computer...

Why don't teachers teach AI ethics? Understanding teachers' beliefs and intentions in Chinese AI curriculum implementation through the theory of planned behaviour

Resumen:

While artificial intelligence (AI) education is expanding globally, the implementation of AI ethics education in K-12 AI curricula remains a critical challenge, particularly in top-down curriculum reform contexts like China. This study investigates the factors influencing secondary information technology (IT) teachers' intention to teach AI ethics, grounding in Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). Through semi-structured interviews with 14 in-service teachers in China's Greater Bay Area (GBA), we identified key behavioural beliefs (e.g., fostering critical thinking, navigating rapid technological change, and adapting western-centric ethics), normative beliefs (e.g., new curriculum policy,...
