Stephen Atlas (2023)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Temas: tecnología educativa

Resumen:

Texto completo

This guide is an exploration of ChatGPT for higher education, written with help from ChatGPT during the prewriting, writing and revising phases of this project. I reviewed, revised and edited this text. I verified the originality of this work through a plagiarism check on Grammarly, and I take responsibility for the content in this document. In writing this guide, I learned about writing with ChatGPT and what prompts ChatGPT to excel and what causes ChatGPT to generate less helpful text. The objectives and content of this guide are tailored to the areas of strength and for an audience of academics who are exploring and expanding their own use of ChatGPT.

Voice and Mirroring in L2 Pronunciation Instruction
Darren LaScotte, Colleen Meyers, Elaine Tarone (2023)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: pronunciación

Resumen:

Voice and Mirroring in L2 Pronunciation Instruction presents an approach to teaching pronunciation which aims for learners to internalize the "voices" (complexes of linguistic and non-linguistic features that embody particular speakers' emotion, social stance, and group identification) of proficient speakers of the second language (L2). Beginning with a review of "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches to second language acquisition (SLA) research and pronunciation teaching, the authors present previously published and new findings in interlanguage phonology and variationist approaches to SLA showing the powerful impact of sociolinguistic context on L2 pronunciation. On the basis of this review, the authors argue that a top-down approach which begins with social context is preferable in both the research and teaching of L2 pronunciation...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: tecnología educativa

Resumen:

Texto completo

The release of ChatGPT has sparked significant academic integrity concerns in higher education. However, some commentators have pointed out that generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT can enhance student learning. Consequently, academics should adapt their teaching and assessment practices to embrace the new reality of living, working, and studying in a world where AI is freely available. Despite this important debate, very little academic literature has been published on ChatGPT and other generative AI tools. This article uses content analysis to examine news articles (N=100) about how ChatGPT is disrupting higher education, concentrating specifically on...

Answering these questions and more, this book guides you through one of the most exciting and innovative research methods in the field of linguistics. Divided into three parts, the chapters first offer an historical introduction and a foundational overview to the neurology and physiology of the eye and the common measurements and tools used in eye tracking. Education Sciences
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

An artificial intelligence-based chatbot, ChatGPT, was launched in November 2022 and is capable of generating cohesive and informative human-like responses to user input. This rapid review of the literature aims to enrich our understanding of ChatGPT's capabilities across subject domains, how it can be used in education, and potential issues raised by researchers during the first three months of its release (i.e., December 2022 to February 2023). A search of the relevant databases and Google Scholar yielded 50 articles for content analysis (i.e., open coding, axial coding, and selective coding). The findings of this review suggest that ChatGPT's performance varied across subject domains, ranging...

The wisdom of crowds: When teacher judgments outperform word-frequency as a predictor of students' vocabulary knowledge
Pablo Robles García, Jeffrey Stewart, Christopher Nicklin (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: creencias y actitudes de los profesores

Resumen:

This study investigated the effectiveness of word-frequency and teacher judgments in determining students' vocabulary knowledge and compared the predictive powers of both approaches when estimating vocabulary knowledge. Twenty-nine second language (L2) Spanish teachers were asked to predict how likely their students would know words from a 216-word Yes/No test that measures knowledge of the first 3,000 words in Spanish. The accuracy of their responses was compared with the results of 1,075 L2 Spanish students who completed the same test. To examine if the results could generalize to other L2 settings, 394 L2 English students completed a 70-word Yes/No test that measures knowledge of the first 14,000 words in English, and 15 L2 English language instructors attempted to predict which words would or would not be recognized. Results...

Language and Antiracism: An Antiracist Approach to Teaching (Spanish) Language in the USA
José L. Magro (2023)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: discriminación y racismo

Resumen:

Beginning from the premise that being non-racist "and other 'neutral' positions" are inadequate in the face of a racist society and institutions, this book provides language educators with practical tools to implement antiracist pedagogy in their classrooms. It offers readers a solid theoretical grounding for its practical suggestions, drawing on work in critical race theory, critical sociolinguistics and language ideology to support its argument for antiracist pedagogy as a necessary form of direct action. The author contends that antiracist pedagogy is a crucial part of the project of decolonizing universities, which goes beyond tokenistic diversity initiatives and combats racism in institutions that have historically helped to perpetuate it. The author's pedagogical suggestions are accompanied by online resources which will help...

Understanding language teacher wellbeing: An ESM study of daily stressors and uplifts
Tammy Gregersen, Sarah Mercer, Claire Ann Banga (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: profesorado

Resumen:

This study focuses on understanding language teachers' lived experiences of their stressors and positive uplifts from a holistic perspective covering their professional lives in school, their personal lives beyond, and the connection between the two. The aim was to explore the nature of teachers' experiences of stress and how they spilled over from work into home domains. We also were keen to understand the dynamics of their experiences of stress and how their perception of daily stressors was related to their overall sense of wellbeing as well as their life and chronic stressors. The data were collected via a specially created app, which collected survey data and experience sampling method (ESM) data from language teachers across the globe. Teachers' wellbeing was investigated using the PERMA Profiler (Butler & Kern, 2016), their...
