Resumen:
The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools has given rise to a growing discussion of the potential challenges and benefits that the use of these technologies may present in the field of education. This study examines the acceptance of the use of GenAI tools for teaching and learning among primary and secondary school teachers in Hong Kong. It uses an extension of the technology acceptance model (TAM) with a modified framework that incorporates two key factors: self-efficacy and subjective norm. Data were collected from a sample of 367 primary and secondary school teachers in Hong Kong using questionnaires containing items for six constructs: self-efficacy,...

Resumen:
The recent emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools, such as ChatGPT, has brought profound changes to higher education. While many studies have examined the potential use of ChatGPT in teaching and learning, few have explored the opportunities to develop assessments that facilitate the use of multiple technological innovations (i.e. traditional AI and GenAI tools). We conducted qualitative research to address this gap. The assessments of an elective English course in Hong Kong were re-designed to incorporate GenAI and other tools. Students were asked to employ and reflect on their use of these tools for their writing assessments. We analyzed the written reflections of...

Resumen:
“AI ethics” has become a popular term for signaling concerns with the development and application of artificial intelligence, and a hot-button issue in both academic and public discourse. The current work tends to center adult-oriented, adult-generated, and issues-based conceptions of ethics. This paper reports on an alternative model for “doing ethics” via co-design with young people, highlighting the need for students to engage in AI ethics work, especially as AI is increasingly used in their education and social lives. In particular, we focus on developing a rights-based approach, using the White House Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights as a starting point for redesigning core AI ethics...

Resumen:
With the advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the increasing volume of online educational data, Deep Learning techniques have played a critical role in predicting student performance. Recent developments have assisted instructors in determining the strengths and weaknesses of student achievement. This understanding will benefit from adopting the necessary interventions to assist students in improving their performance, helping at-risk of failure students, and preventing dropout rates. The review analyzed 46 studies between 2019 and 2023 that apply one or more Deep Learning (DL) techniques, either single or in combination with Machine Learning (ML) or Ensemble Learning techniques....

Resumen:
This paper explores the potential of large language models, specifically ChatGPT, to reframe problems from probability theory and statistics, making them accessible to students across diverse academic fields including biology, economics, law, and engineering. The aim of this study is to enhance interdisciplinary learning by rendering complex concepts more accessible, relevant, and engaging. We conducted a pilot study using ChatGPT to adapt problems across 17 disciplines, evaluated through expert review. Our results demonstrate the significant potential of ChatGPT in reshaping problems for diverse settings, preserving theoretical meaning in 77.1% of cases, and requiring no or only minor...

Resumen:
This study investigates the integration of Generative AI (GenAI) tools into educational practices, specifically focusing on the design of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) lesson plans. Based on a particular IBL framework that synthesizes the core attributes of IBL by combining the strengths of various models, the study explores educators' potential utilization of GenAI tools across the framework's phases. Among other capabilities, GenAI tools were examined for their support in content creation, assessment and feedback processes, as well as in the design of learning activities and lesson plans. This examination informed the classification of GenAI tools in this study, organizing them according...

Resumen:
This research investigates bias in AI algorithms used for monitoring student progress, specifically focusing on bias related to age, disability, and gender. The study is motivated by incidents such as the UK A-level grading controversy, which demonstrated the real-world implications of biased algorithms. Using the Open University Learning Analytics Dataset, the research evaluates fairness with metrics like ABROCA, Average Odds Difference, and Equality of Opportunity Difference. The analysis is structured into three experiments. The first experiment examines fairness as an attribute of the data sources and reveals that institutional data is the primary contributor to model discrimination,...

Resumen:
In the ever-changing landscape of education, the integration of technology has become an inevitable force that reshapes the foundations of teaching and learning. Amidst this transformative wave, the concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken center stage, promising innovative approaches, and increased efficiency. Within this context, the exploration of preservice teachers' behavioural intention to employ AI in lesson planning has emerged as a critical issue for examination. This study used a descriptive cross-sectional survey design and employed a purposive sampling technique to recruit 783 preservice teachers. By employing a cutting-edge dual-staged partial least squares structural...

Resumen:
Educational technology research has found that parents of young children widely share concerns about extended screen time, lack of physical activity, and lack of social interaction. Kid Space was developed to address these concerns by enabling multi-modal and immersive collaborative play-based learning. Kid Space utilizes multiple sensing technologies with an immersive physical space through a human-scale wall projection and incorporates a conversational AI agent to interact with children, understand individual progress, and personalize learning experiences in a blended physical and digital environment. To evaluate Kid Space in the wild, we conducted a multi-method user study involving a...

Resumen:
Researchers have sought for decades to automate holistic essay scoring. Over the years, these programs have improved significantly. However, accuracy requires significant amounts of training on human-scored texts—reducing the expediency and usefulness of such programs for routine uses by teachers across the nation on non-standardized prompts. This study analyzes the output of multiple versions of ChatGPT scoring of secondary student essays from three extant corpora and compares it to quality human ratings. We find that the current iteration of ChatGPT scoring is not statistically significantly different from human scoring; substantial agreement with humans is achievable and may be...
