Resumen:

This paper aims to explore the shortcomings and challenges of Applied Cognitive Linguistics (ACL) in L2 classrooms and research. It examines the main issues and presents a case study with three quasi-experimental classroom studies. These experiments taught the Spanish past simple tenses using approaches informed by Cognitive Linguistics and Communicative Language Teaching, plus a control group, through a pretest/posttest design. Results favored cognitive-pedagogical instruction, but only in one production task (Alonso-Aparicio & Llopis-García, 2019). En este volumen, resultado de los trabajos vinculados al proyecto I + D Gramática avanzada de Español/LE (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación. Ref.: FFI2009-13107), se revisan algunos de los fundamentos en que puede basarse la enseñanza de la gramática avanzada de ELE desde los puntos de vista lingüístico, psicolingüístico y metodológico, y se ofrecen tanto criterios generales como recursos didácticos particulares para abordar problemas gramaticales propios de los niveles avanzados: pronombres personales, sistema verbal, determinación y adjetivación, etc.

This article lies within the field of applied cognitive linguistics (ACL) and presents empirical work that addresses overlooked effects of assessment typology in second language (L2) learning. It examines whether pairing a cognitive instructional approach with matching assessment design results in greater learning outcomes over the more pervasive notional-functional approaches. The last two decades have witnessed a proliferation of empirical research measuring the effectiveness of ACL-based teaching approaches, yet studies have only been partly fruitful in eliciting data that truly favors ACL. We argue that this is largely due to assessment design, which typically measures performance via correct vs. incorrect tasks.
