Due to competing demands of university students, short-term study abroad trips are on the rise. The present study is the only study that has explored a trip of less than one week and the ways in which L2 participants have developed their intercultural competence daily. This study was small in scale, since only two second language (L2) learners of Spanish studied abroad. In addition, this study used Merriam?s (1998) case study framework to illuminate the case of two L2 learners and their short-term fiveday study abroad experience. Resumen:

This study examines the development of speaker and listener assessments by second language (L2) learners of Spanish during a semester abroad in Spain. Assessments express the speaker?s judgment, attitude, or affect towards what is said and perform the crucial functions of closing a topic and displaying shared understanding with an interlocutor. The results indicate that learners increased their use of listener assessments, as well as their use of specific structures and lexical items in speaker assessments. Participation in everyday conversation as well as explicit instruction represented ways that students could learn to make assessments. The article concludes with suggestions for teaching assessments in the Spanish L2 classroom.

The present study reports on the impact of pedagogical intervention on the second language (L2) pragmatic development of seven L2 learners of Spanish during a short-term study abroad (SA) experience in Buenos Aires, Argentina. During pre-departure orientation, the students received 90 minutes of explicit instruction about requests. In the course of their time abroad, the students were given strategic tasks designed to draw their attention to pragmatic features of the host community. Using role plays to measure the effects of the intervention, we compared our students? request strategies before and after SA, and then once again five weeks after their return to the United States. This study set out to re-examine the effectiveness of study abroad programs in second language (L2) acquisition through a multi-level meta-analysis. Overall, 42 primary studies published between 1995 and 2019 were identified, and in total 283 effect sizes were meta-analysed. Este artículo analiza el grado y el tipo de motivación en 97 estudiantes de español L2 universitarios en un programa de estudios en el extranjero (PREE). También indaga sobre el efecto del contacto con hispanohablantes previo a la movilidad, el uso de la lengua durante la estancia y las actitudes sobre el español y sus comunidades de habla.
