Exploring repeated captioning viewing as a way to promote vocabulary learning: time lag between repetitions and learner factors
Carmen Muñoz, Anastasia Pattemore, Daniela Avello (2022)
Computer Assisted Language Learning
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Temas: artículo input audiovisual

Resumen:

Repeated viewing of the same video is a common strategy among autonomous language learners as well as a much used pedagogical strategy among foreign language (FL) teachers. Learners may watch the same video more than once, to increase global comprehension of the target language or to focus their attention on linguistic aspects, such as new vocabulary or pronunciation. This study sought to examine to what extent repetition is more efficient for vocabulary learning if the second viewing follows the first immediately, or a week later. Participants were upper intermediate-level college learners who were distributed into three groups, one watched a TV series episode twice in the same session, one also watched the same episode twice but one week apart, and the last (control) group did not watch the video. Tests of word meaning recognition...

L2 Vocabulary learning from reading: Effects of word-focused activity type, learner variables, and announcement

Temas: artículo aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

Classroom studies have shown that learning new vocabulary from reading can be enhanced if the reading task is followed by a word-focused activity, such as a fill-in-the-blank activity. However, little is known about: (1) whether a post-reading word-focused activity can also positively affect vocabulary uptake in out-of-classroom contexts when there is no instructor support, (2) whether vocabulary gains differ based on proficiency levels, and (3) whether awareness of an upcoming post-reading word-focused activity influences learning gains. The present study addresses these issues by having native (high-proficient) or nonnative (L2 high-intermediate) English speakers read a narrative containing 16 recurring non-word target...

Resumen:

Texto completo

Multimodal input ? which combines written, auditory, and/or visual modalities ? is pervasive in everyday life and could serve as a source of rich input in language teaching. In recent years, research has determined that vocabulary learning is one of the clear benefits of being exposed to such input. Regrettably, only a handful of studies have investigated whether and how second language (L2) teachers approach multimodal input in teaching. To further contribute to the research?practice dialogue, we examined factors that influence L2 teachers? use of multimodal input in L2 teaching. This qualitative case study...

The relative effects of L1 and L2 glosses on L2 learning: A meta-analysis

Resumen:

Texto completo

Glossing is a widely used and examined vocabulary learning tool, and one of the major branches of glossing research has compared the relative effects of first language (L1) and second language (L2) glosses on reading comprehension and vocabulary learning. However, the findings in this literature have not been consistent, calling for a comprehensive and systematic review. To this end, we conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the relative effects of L1 and L2 glossing on L2 reading comprehension and L2 vocabulary learning. Based on 78 effect sizes gathered from 26 studies representing 30 independent samples (N = 2,189...

Current Perspectives in Spanish Lexical Development
VV. AA., Irene Checa-García, Laura Marqués-Pascual (2024)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Temas: libro vocabulario

Resumen:

New quantitative methodology and the development of corpus and experimental linguistics tools have recently made researching lexical comprehension and production more accessible. While several tools and data sets are available in English (Coh-metrix, CELEX) and a few other languages, the development of resources and empirical research is still lacking in Spanish.

This volume brings together original empirical research and theoretical perspectives that examine lexical development in Spanish L1, L2 and L3, with a focus on different teaching approaches and textbook coverage of Spanish lexicon in L2 curricula and the use of corpus linguistics in methodological investigations. Some questions addressed include the role of lexical development in mapping grammatical acquisition phases, the potential transfers of L1 to L2 lexical...

The effect of textual glosses on L2 vocabulary acquisition: A meta-analysis

Tipo: artículo

Resumen:

Texto completo

Despite the growing interest in incorporating textual glosses into second language (L2) reading in hypermedia and paper media, no agreements have been reached as to whether and what extent a textual gloss facilitates L2 learners? vocabulary acquisition in hypermedia and paper media. The present study meta-analysed the overall effects of textual glosses and different glossing types (i.e. language, location, and mode) on L2 vocabulary acquisition, as well as the moderation effects on the variability of L2 vocabulary acquisition effect sizes. Based on a comprehensive search, 20 studies involving 2,291 participants that...

Instructional task modality and teacher effects on L2 vocabulary learning: Evidence from adolescent learners
Hye Won Shin (2024)
Language Teaching Research

Tipo: artículo

Temas: artículo investigación

Resumen:

This study investigated which type of instructional modality is most conducive to vocabulary learning. A total of 6 classrooms (N = 121), all from one 6th grade cohort, were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: (1) vocabulary training anchored in listening, (2) vocabulary training anchored in reading, or (3) vocabulary training anchored in writing. Three parallel versions of the tasks involved 21 target words embedded in contexts, but the students encountered these words explicitly through either listening or reading or writing modality. The study found, first, that there were statistically significant differences in favor of the reading and writing groups in terms of word association ability and vocabulary knowledge. Students in the reading and writing groups showed roughly the same level of vocabulary knowledge. Second, the...

The impact of cognate vocabulary on explicit L2 rule learning
Noèlia Sanahuja, Kepa Erdocia (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Temas: artículo cognados

Resumen:

Texto completo

According to Hopp?s Lexical Bottleneck Hypothesis, difficulties in second language (L2) lexical processing may lead to non-target syntactic computations. In line with this hypothesis, cognates ? which are processed faster than non-cognates, as defined by the cognate facilitation effect ? can ease L2 syntactic processing. In order to investigate whether cognates additionally facilitate L2 syntax learning, we had two groups of Spanish natives learn an artificial language drawing on Basque. Each group explicitly learnt a set of either Spanish?Basque cognates or non-cognates and a word order grammatical rule. Then, two sentence?picture matching tasks tested their ability to apply the rule (1) with cognates vs. non-cognates...
