Virtual exchanges (VE) are gaining popularity as an opportunity to provide learners with authentic language and intercultural experiences mediated by technology. This article presents the results of a VE project aimed at developing intercultural and digital competences among Spanish Language Teaching (SLT) learners and trainee teachers. Among the main components of the project, the design, implementation and monitoring of telecollaborative tasks constitute key elements for the success of the project. The VE was carried out with Spanish learners in Ireland and Spanish and Latin American trainee teachers in Spain. Given the fundamental contribution of formulaic sequences to the fluent, natural second/foreign language (L2) use and processing, finding effective ways of improving learners's formulaic language has increasingly engaged the attention of L2 practitioners. Social justice pedagogies (SJPs) are increasingly common in world language (WL) classrooms. However, little is known about how these activities unfold in real time. This qualitative, observational, and exploratory study adopts a multimodal, microanalytic lens to examine the enactment of an in-class social justice (SJ) activity involving four learners in a postsecondary second language Spanish course in the U.S. Using video data, the study draws on Sociocognitive Theory and Multimodal Interaction Analysis to pursue two goals: (1) to investigate whether learners enacted the SJ activity in ways consistent with both the activity's instructions and broader SJPs, and (2) to explore whether and how language learning emerges within this interaction. En la enseñanza de ELE proliferan los prejuicios sobre la lengua que deben aprender los estudiantes y la manera en que han de hacerlo. Metodológica­mente, se pasó de un enfoque elitista y centrado casi de modo exclusivo en la lengua escrita, a otros que, bajo la premisa de la comunicatividad, proscribían la gramática. También, con frecuencia, se priorizó el español normativo frente a cualquier registro coloquial, y el español normativo, al de cualquiera de las otras variantes. De la misma forma, los ejercicios estructurales de huecos, o las actividades lúdicas (por acudir al antagonismo extremo) se han encontrado con las reconvenciones de teóricos de la enseñanza de segundas lenguas.

Presenting in a second language (L2) is perhaps the greatest challenge for international students in a foreign academic context. In this study, we examine the multimodal (verbal and non-verbal) oral performances of two L2 and two L1 groups of Spanish students enrolled in a university Applied Linguistics course. To determine the specific demands and challenges that each group faces, we conducted a questionnaire with 16 participants and carried out an audiovisual discourse analysis of the presentations based on a multimodal framework applied to the use of academic Spanish.
