Impact of generative AI on critical thinking skills in undergraduates: A systematic review
P. P. Premkumar, M. R. K. N. Yatigammana, S. Kannangara (2024)
Journal of Desk Research Review and Analysis

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Resumen:

Texto completo

Despite widespread acknowledgement of the significance of critical thinking skills for success in today's job market, higher education institutions face challenges in effectively nurturing these skills in students. Educational policies, reports, and employer demands emphasise the importance of critical thinking, yet a gap remains between its recognised value and the actual proficiency levels among university students. This study employs a systematic literature review approach to address a research question, "What is the impact of Generative AI on the critical thinking skills of undergraduates?" About half of the thirty selected papers suggest that Generative AI benefits undergraduate critical...

Resumen:

In recent years, no other technology has revolutionised our life as Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). GenAI has gained the attention of a myriad of users in almost every profession. Its advancement has had an intense impact on education, significantly disrupting the assessment design and evaluation methodologies. Despite the potential benefits and possibilities of GenAI in the education sector, there are several concerns primarily centred around academic integrity, authenticity, equity of access, assessment evaluation methodology, and feedback. Consequently, academia is encountering challenges in assessment design that are essential to retaining academic integrity in the age of GenAI. In this article, we discuss the challenges, and opportunities that need to be addressed for the assessment design and evaluation. The article...

Generative AI in education and research: A systematic mapping review
Abdullahi Yusuf, Nasrin Pervin, Marcos Román-González (2024)
Review of Education
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Given the potential applications of generative AI (GenAI) in education and its rising interest in research, this systematic review mapped the thematic landscape of 407 publications indexed in the Web of Science, ScienceDirect and Scopus. Using EPPI Reviewer, publication type, educational level, disciplines, research areas and applications of GenAI were extracted. Eight discursive themes were identified, predominantly focused on ‘application, impact and potential’, ‘ethical implication and risks’, ‘perspectives and experiences’, ‘institutional and individual adoption’, and ‘performance and intelligence’. GenAI was conceptualised as a tool for ‘pedagogical enhancement’, ‘specialised training and practices’, ‘writing assistance and productivity’, ‘professional skills and development’, and as an ‘interdisciplinary learning tool’. Key gaps...

The present discussion examines the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in educational settings, focusing on the necessity for AI literacy, prompt engineering proficiency, and enhanced critical thinking skills. The introduction of AI into education marks a significant departure from conventional teaching methods, offering personalized learning and support for diverse educational requirements, including students with special needs. However, this integration presents challenges, including the need for comprehensive educator training and curriculum adaptation to align with societal structures. AI literacy is identified as crucial, encompassing an...

GenAI detection tools, adversarial techniques and implications for inclusivity in higher education

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study investigates the efficacy of six major Generative AI (GenAI) text detectors when confronted with machine-generated content that has been modified using techniques designed to evade detection by these tools (n=805). The results demonstrate that the detectors' already low accuracy rates (39.5%) show major reductions in accuracy (17.4%) when faced with manipulated content, with some techniques proving more effective than others in evading detection. The accuracy limitations and the potential for false accusations demonstrate that these tools cannot currently be recommended for determining whether violations of academic integrity have occurred, underscoring the challenges educators face in maintaining inclusive and...

Sprinkling enchanting pixie dust on teaching and learning with gamification

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: propuesta didáctica

Temas: gamificación

Resumen:

Texto completo

The effects of over-reliance on AI dialogue systems on students’ cognitive abilities: a systematic review
Chunpeng Zhai, Santoso Wibowo, Lily D. Li (2024)

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

This systematic review investigates how students' over-reliance on AI dialogue systems affects their critical cognitive capabilities, including decision-making, critical thinking, and analytical reasoning. Over-reliance on AI occurs when users accept AI-generated recommendations without question, typically when individuals struggle to assess the reliability of AI or how much trust to place in its suggestions. Following PRISMA guidelines, the review evaluated 14 articles from ProQuest, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect and Web of Science. The findings indicate that over-reliance stemming from ethical issues of AI impacts cognitive abilities, as individuals increasingly favor fast and optimal...

Grounding AI: Understanding the implications of generative AI in world language & culture education

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo
