Resumen:
This chapter presents a critical analysis of generative AI (GenAI) detection tools in higher education assessments. The rapid advancement and widespread adoption of GenAI, particularly in education, necessitates a reevaluation of traditional academic integrity mechanisms. I explore the effectiveness, vulnerabilities, and ethical implications of AI detection tools in the context of preserving academic integrity. My analysis synthesizes insights from various case studies, newspaper articles, and student testimonies to scrutinize the practical and philosophical challenges associated with AI detection. I argue that reliance on detection mechanisms is misaligned with the educational landscape, where...

Resumen:
The rapid integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into educational contexts has presented both opportunities and challenges for students seeking and using feedback. While AI-generated feedback can offer increased access, timely responses and personalised insights, concerns about the quality of AI-generated feedback still persist, including issues of bias, factual inaccuracies, and homogenisation. This study investigates how students use, value and trust AI-generated feedback compared to feedback from educators. This paper draws on a large-scale cross-sectional survey administered across four major Australian universities. A quantitative analysis of ...

Resumen:
In the age of artificial intelligence, generating an essay is as simple as typing a prompt and pressing enter. What does this mean for the art of writing? According to longtime writing teacher John Warner: not much. More Than Words argues that generative AI tools like ChatGPT not only can kill the student essay but should, since these assignments don't challenge students to do the real work of writing. To Warner, writing is thinking—discovering your ideas while trying to capture them on a page—and feeling—grappling with what it fundamentally means to be human. More Than Words calls for us to use AI as an opportunity to reckon with our relationship with writing.

The TSLL2023 event contributed to the launch of what promises to be an extensive program of research exploring AI in applied linguistics. The chapters in this volume were developed from selected conference presentations reporting on investigations of the potential, uses, and implications of AI technologies for language learning, teaching, assessment, and research. Responding to the conference theme, “Advancing Technologies – Expanding Research,” the papers in this volume illustrate some of the responses mounted by applied linguists in response to the unprecedented public display of language generation capacities observed in open AI over the previous eleven months.
Quince capítulos, agrupados en cuatro bloques:...

Resumen:
With research showing the benefits of feedback, teachers have come under increasing pressure to provide more, including more personalised, and more detailed responses to students. This often places heavy demands on teachers and with ever-larger class sizes and heavier workloads, teacher fatigue and burn-out are common. Automation has the potential to change all this and new digital resources have already proven to be valuable in supporting L2 writing. In this paper I look at the contribution of Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) programmes and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to feedback. The ability to provide instant local and global feedback across multiple drafts targeted to student needs and in greater quantities promises to increase learner motivation and autonomy while relieving teachers of hours of marking. But haven...

Large language models (LLMs) that power chatbots such as ChatGPT have capabilities across numerous domains. Teachers and students have been increasingly using chatbots in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects in various ways, including for assessment purposes. However, there has been a lack of systematic investigation into LLMs’ capabilities and limitations in automatically generating items for STEM subject assessments, especially given that LLMs can hallucinate and may risk promoting misconceptions and hindering conceptual understanding. To address this, we systematically investigated LLMs' conceptual understanding and quality of working in generating question...

Resumen:
The widespread usage of computer-based assessments and individualized learning platforms has increased demand for the rapid production of high-quality items. Automated item generation (AIG), the process of using item models to generate new items with the help of computer technology, was proposed to reduce reliance on human subject experts. While AIG has been used in test development, recent advances in machine learning algorithms offer the potential to enhance its efficiency further. This paper presents an innovative approach utilizing OpenAI's latest transformer-based language model, GPT-3, to generate reading passages. Existing reading passages were used in carefully engineered prompts to...

Resumen:
The rapid integration of Generative AI (GenAI) into higher education presents both opportunities and systemic challenges, particularly in domains where feedback is central to learning. This study investigates the capacity of a large language model to generate formative feedback for student-created UML diagrams in a university software engineering course. Across two cohorts (N = 262), AI-generated, teacher-generated, and no-feedback conditions were compared, analyzing student perceptions, learning outcomes, and grading reliability. Results show that while students rated GenAI feedback as beneficial and often comparable to human comments, teacher feedback remained more effective in supporting...
