The promise that AI tools will relieve teachers of tedious tasks and liberate time for more «valuable» work with students has become a dominant narrative. However, the implementation of automated technologies raises questions around how human labour is implicated and situated in these processes. From the perspective of maintenance and repair studies we approach the often-hidden labour that teachers undertake when engaging with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies. Drawing on interviews with Swedish teachers we expose the tools' inherent limitations in teaching contexts, and highlight the pedagogical, social, and moral dimensions of educational practice. We argue that these...

This qualitative study, drawing on positioning analysis, examines four world language teachers' reported practices of integrating ChatGPT into their instruction. The participants were enrolled in the graduate-level Applied Linguistics or Spanish Language Teaching program at a public university in the southcentral US. This study addresses two research questions: (1) How did world language teachers position themselves and others in relation to their integration of ChatGPT into teaching… (2) What factors mediated their ChatGPT-supported instruction? The analyses of interview transcripts and weekly reports revealed that the world language teachers positioned themselves as active agents, assuming dynamic roles vis-à-vis ChatGPT (i.e., ChatGPT guide, explorer, manager, and ...

Examines the effects of ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode on the development of university students' oral proficiency. Following a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, the study measured improvement over an 8-week intervention and then gathered learners' perspectives through semi-structured interviews. Quantitative findings showed that fluency and lexical resources increased significantly, but pronunciation did not. The qualitative data focus on three themes: the potential of AI for low-anxiety practice, learners' frustration with the lack of nuanced feedback on accent, and difficulties with real-time corrective functions. The authors propose a «Mixed Dialogical Model» combining...

Resumen:

Generative AI tools provide opportunities for personalizing and improving the education process. This paper analyzes the tool Brisk Teaching, used in the courses Information and Communication Technologies and E-Business during the academic year 2024/25 at the Zagreb School of Economics and Management. After recognizing weak points in students' knowledge, the authors implemented chatbots to help students learn and to provide professors with quick feedback on student progress. The paper examines the connection between students' activity with the GenAI tool and the results achieved in the knowledge test: students were very satisfied with its implementation and believe it provides additional motivation for learning.

This study examines the impact of Gen-AI on EFL learners' foreign language (FL) pronunciation ability, FL speaking anxiety, self-directed speaking motivation, and social interaction confidence through Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT). Using a mixed-methods approach, the study conducted quantitative assessments of pronunciation ability and speaking anxiety, while qualitatively exploring learners' experiences with Gen-AI feedback through in-depth interviews. Findings suggest that learners experienced improvements in pronunciation ability and reductions in FL speaking anxiety, which coincided with increased self-directed motivation and social interaction confidence. When...

Resumen:

The rapid integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into educational contexts has presented both opportunities and challenges for students seeking and using feedback. While AI-generated feedback can offer increased access, timely responses and personalised insights, concerns about the quality of AI-generated feedback still persist, including issues of bias, factual inaccuracies, and homogenisation. This study investigates how students use, value and trust AI-generated feedback compared to feedback from educators. This paper draws on a large-scale cross-sectional survey administered across four major Australian universities. A quantitative analysis of ...

In exploring the interplay between artificial intelligence technologies and curriculum adaptation, this study bridges a significant gap by exploring how AI tools influence teachers' strategies for adapting curricula. Employing an explanatory sequential design, the research analyses qualitative and quantitative data from 440 teachers, using the Curriculum Adaptation Patterns Scale and focus group semi-structured interviews. Results indicate a balanced approach towards extending and revising the curriculum, with less emphasis on omission. Qualitatively, teachers reported positive experiences using AI, particularly ChatGPT, to make their lessons better fit students' needs: omitting parts...
