This study aimed at developing an instructional tool for the artificial intelligence education of young students, and used learning analytics to identify the sequential learning behavioral patterns of students during the process of learning with the instructional tool. The instructional experiment took 9 weeks. The first stage of the course was 5 weeks spent on individual learning of MIT App Inventor and Personal Image Classifier. The second stage was 4 weeks spent on cooperative learning to make a robot car and play a computational thinking board game. In the second stage, the students worked in pairs to make the robot car. Finally, they played the computational thinking board game with...

Baker et al. (2021) recently proposed using a philosophical framework to classify learning analytics research in terms of four paradigms. Here I build on their theme of reflecting on philosophical differences in different approaches to learning analytics. I first present two limitations of their classification, which raise questions for how to best classify different approaches in learning analytics. In an attempt to resolve these questions, I draw upon the bias-variance tradeoff from machine learning and show how different learning analytics approaches can be viewed in terms of their positions on the tradeoff. However, I claim that this is not enough, as we must also be attuned to the...

Early prediction of students' primary school academic performance is crucial for planning timely interventions for those expected to struggle. Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and Extra Trees AI techniques were used to study 2549 first graders to predict end-of-year academic performance and identify critical predictors for targeted interventions. The Extra Trees model used EPIS (Empresários pela Inclusão Social) screening to yield high F1 scores above 99.7 %, accurately identifying passing and failing students. Out of 142 variables, the top ten strongest predictors of academic success were categorized into three areas: 1) teacher perceptions of cognitive function, particularly attention (...

As with other sectors over the last few years, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly reshaping the education ecosystem introducing new epistemic, ethical, and organisational challenges. Education leaders face the need to shift established systems and processes to reimagine how more adaptive complexity-informed GenAI enabled systems operate with new governance, pedagogy, and strategic decision-making. In this context, traditional bureaucratic leadership structures are ill-suited for the pace, scale, and sociotechnical nature of the ongoing technological disruption. This paper addresses this gap by introducing a novel leadership framework called SPARK, designed to...

This study investigates university teachers’ relationships with emerging technologies by focusing on the uptake of artificial intelligence in higher education practices. We utilise an experimental philosophy approach to i) determine university teachers’ intuitions around universities’ responsibilities to adopt new artificial intelligence technologies, ii) understand the conditions under which university teachers consider artificial intelligence defensible and, hence, would be willing to introduce such tools and services into their daily practice and iii) specify teachers’ self-reported knowledge of artificial intelligence. An online survey, where participants were sent one of three...

Resumen:

I argue that ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence tools pose three main threats to our current education systems, creating problems of measurement, information accuracy, and skill devaluation. But when we place these threats into historical context, we see that AI tools can also empower students and level the educational playing field. In classrooms from primary to tertiary and spanning all content areas, we can help our students become critical thinkers by using ChatGPT to comprehend texts, aggregate knowledge, and understand genre conventions in prose as well as programming. The aim is to help students leverage AI as a tool that they question and critique, advancing their...

This study investigated the mediating roles of academic stress, critical thinking, and performance expectations in the relationship between academic self-efficacy and AI dependency among university students. Data were collected via validated instruments and analyzed via structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) in a cross-sectional study that included 676 students from six universities in northern Peru. The findings indicated that the relationship between academic self-efficacy and AI dependency was substantially mediated by academic stress (β = 0.398, p < 0.001). Furthermore, this relationship is serially mediated by academic stress and performance expectations (β = 0.325, p < 0.001)....

In an era where international education trends increasingly prioritize the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), there is a critical need to understand how students effectively use these tools to foster innovative and deep learning. This study addresses this gap by investigating higher education students’ experiences with advanced AI tools within a nine-week instructional experiment structured by the Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) model. Our primary motivation was to explore how a structured, inquiry-based framework could scaffold the development of sophisticated AI literacy, guiding students toward strategic human-AI partnerships. We employed a qualitative case study design,...

Resumen:

Artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in education requires strategic leadership from education managers, yet little research examines AI readiness among this stakeholder group, particularly in post-Soviet transitional contexts. As decision-makers who control whether and how AI enters educational practice, managers’ readiness is essential for evidence-based policy. This study investigates (1) the current state of AI adoption readiness among Ukrainian education managers, including the gap between personal and institutional readiness; (2) the barriers and facilitators that most strongly influence AI readiness; (3) distinct manager typologies based on readiness profiles; and (4) policy...

Temporally-focused analytics of self-regulated learning: A systematic review of literature

Resumen:

We present a systematic literature review of data-driven self-regulated learning (SRL) that emphasises the methodological importance of temporality and sequence, as opposed to conventional statistical analysis. Researchers seem unanimous in their view of the importance of SRL in modern online and blended educational settings; this is borne out by number of reviews of literature on the subject. There has, as yet, been no systematic treatment of SRL in the context of its conceptualisation as a phenomenon that unfolds in sequences over time. To address this limitation, this review explores the corpus of work (n = 53) in which SRL and its related dimensions are analysed through the lenses of...
