Background: The use of Artificial Intelligence or AI is rising in higher education. With this rise, the morality of AI programs is being questioned. There is, as such, a need to understand how notions of Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics or FATE are identified in the AI and higher education studies to date. Purpose: This systematic review paper aims to understand definitions and studies on FATE and AI in the higher education literature. The contribution of this work is to provide a summary of FATE development and the synthesis of the challenges and potentials of each of the reviewed studies. Method: A total of 33 publications from SCOPUS and Web of Science (WoS) were...

In recent decades, we have witnessed the democratization of AI-powered Educational Technology (AI-EdTech). However, despite the increased accessibility and evolving technological capabilities, its adoption is accompanied by significant challenges, predominantly rooted in social and psychological aspects. At the same time, limited research has been conducted on human factors, especially trust, influencing students' readiness and willingness to adopt AI-EdTech. This study aims to bridge this gap by addressing the multidimensional nature of trust and developing a new instrument for measuring students' perceptions of adopting AI-EdTech. With 665 student responses, we employ Exploratory and...

Resumen:

With the rapid penetration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education, university teachers' AI competency has become a critical determinant of effective technology integration in teaching. However, systematic and empirically validated intervention frameworks to support the development of this competency remain scarce. To address this gap, this study implemented a six-month professional development (PD) programme grounded in the Intelligent-TPACK framework and evaluated its effectiveness using a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test design. A total of 64 teachers participated in the PD programme (experimental group), while pre- and post-test data were also collected from...

Learning theories have historically changed when the conditions of learning evolved. Generative and agentic AI create a new condition by allowing learners to delegate explanation, writing, problem solving, and other cognitive work to systems that can generate, recommend, and sometimes act on the learner’s behalf. This creates a fundamental challenge for learning theory: successful performance can no longer be assumed to indicate learning. Learners may complete tasks effectively with AI support while developing less understanding, weaker judgment, and limited transferable capability. We argue that this problem is not fully captured by existing learning theories. Behaviourism, cognitivism,...

The growth and uptake of educational technology has significantly reshaped the delivery of distance and online learning. With an unprecedented number of learners engaging with online modes of education, there is a growing need to understand the underlying student enrolment motivations, goals and learning behaviours evolving from a highly diverse student population. Research in learning analytics has advanced the use of digital data to understand student learning processes. However, there remains a limited understanding of how non-traditional learner characteristics, needs and motivational factors influence their learning behaviour and engagement strategies. Survey data from 232 students...

To fear or not to fear – Human resource development professionals’ positioning towards artificial intelligence with a focus on augmentation

Resumen:

Artificial intelligence (AI) has far-reaching implications for education. Within organizations, especially companies, human resource development (HRD) enables and supports learning processes among employees. In a similar way to teachers and lecturers, HRD professionals play an important role in implementing AI in HRD. However, there is a lack of quantitative empirical evidence about this process. The aim of this paper is to shed light on how HRD professionals position themselves with respect to AI. The concept of Davenport and Kirby's augmentation strategies, adapted to HRD, act as the theoretical background. The core idea of augmentation lies in human-AI collaboration. In our study, we...

Although there is growing attention to artificial intelligence (AI) ethics education with the rapid surge of AI technology, little research has explored the use of problem-solving to cultivate students' AI ethical awareness. To address this gap, this study developed a scale to multidimensionally measure AI ethical awareness and cultivated students' AI ethical awareness through problem-solving using AI tools within an AI literacy course. A total of 573 Hong Kong secondary and university students participated in a 14-h course. Data was collected through the AI Ethical Awareness Scale (AIEAS) questionnaire and students' self-reflective writings. The AIEAS framework, encompassing three...

Resumen:

The rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED), particularly with the emergence of generative AI, has intensified the need for rigorous, transparent, and pedagogically grounded research reporting. Although existing frameworks offer valuable guidance on ethical responsibility or technical disclosure, they may be complex, fragmented, or difficult to operationalize in empirical and experimental contexts. This paper proposes the TEP (Transparency-Ethics-Pedagogy)-AIED model, a streamlined three-dimensional framework integrating transparency, ethics, and pedagogy to guide the design and reporting of AIED studies. The model highlights clear disclosure of AI system...

Resumen:

Although computerized expert models (i.e., algorithms) could improve educational decisions and judgments, initial research has demonstrated that teachers, like other professional groups, tend to be “algorithm averse.” In the current study, we use behavioral and questionnaire data to examine the extent to which in-service and pre-service (i.e., students in training to become) teachers accept advice from expert models and investigate how teachers' acceptance of expert models could be improved. Although it is often presumed that younger generations are less algorithm averse, we demonstrate that both in-service and pre-service teachers prefer advice from a human source (school counselor) than...

This systematic review investigates learning task design for K-12 AI education, aiming to provide an overview of the status of AI education and identify trends, challenges, and opportunities. Through an analysis of 47 empirical studies, the review presents, synthesizes, and evaluates the educational theories underpinning the learning task design, the content, the pedagogies used for teaching, as well as the measurement and outcomes of the existing literature on AI education programs in K-12 settings. The principal findings reveal a diverse landscape of learning task design for teaching AI to K-12 students. Positive outcomes underscore the effectiveness of well-crafted hands-on tasks in...
