Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly integrating into design education, yet its effects on student learning processes remain empirically underexplored. This study reports a sequential mixed-methods investigation across a built-environment faculty at a research-intensive university, drawing on 24 faculty interviews, a survey of 32 instructors with regression modelling, and five clustered discussions involving 31 participants. Faculty accounts converge on a pattern in which AI amplifies existing differences in student readiness rather than producing uniform improvements. Consistent with cognitive offloading theory, students with stronger foundations use AI to extend reasoning...

This study developed an interactive test dashboard with diagnosis and feedback mechanisms (ITD-DFM) that can generate visualized, rich, and high-quality test feedback for each learner’s learning reflection and review based on simultaneously considering test response time and correctness to assist students’ learning. A quasi-experimental research was conducted with 50 Grade 8 students from two classes in a public junior high school in Taiwan to assess the learning performance of ITD-DFM. One class with 26 students was assigned to the experimental group using the ITD-DFM to support learning, whereas the other class with 24 students was assigned to the control group using the traditional test...

The coronavirus disease – 2019 pandemic has accelerated the proliferation of virtual technologies and had have an enormous impact on education. In this paper, we analyse teachers’ perceptions about the use of the metaverse in educational practices and how it contributes to the local development. We focused our study in China and Spain as reference countries in the metaverse, but whose collaboration, in this arena, is not significant. For that purpose, we designed a questionnaire to explore the views of 20 teachers from each of the two universities selected, one in China and the other one in Spain, which applies an innovation and entrepreneurship education. The results show that the...

The present research was to bridge a research gap in comprehensively understanding students’ perceptions and experiences in utilizing ChatGPT for their writing process in English as a foreign language (EFL) context. The participants were 45 EFL learners in Macau. The study aimed to explore the potential impact of ChatGPT on writing, as well as their perceptions and experiences of ChatGPT in generating feedback for writing. A mixed-methods approach was employed, with quantitative data collected from a questionnaire and qualitative insights drawn from interviews conducted after a semester-long writing course. The findings supported the significant positive effects of AI assistance on writing...

The application of learning sciences with technology has been shown to boost learner interactions, yet the potential of advanced tool, particularly those that leverage Natural Language Processing (NLP), still very much untapped in learning contexts. This paper speaks to this age-old problem of generating quality Multiple-Choice questions (MCQs) – a prevalent but time-consuming mode of assessment – via the suggested comprehensive comparison study of template-based AI solutions. The study contrasts general-purpose Large Language Models (LLMs) with specialized MCQ-focused AI programs. The scientific approach employed was quite stringent, where each of the software applications was benchmarked...

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and gamified learning have attracted interest from language educators and researchers in the field of teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) for their potential to enhance vocabulary acquisition outcomes. However, the relative effectiveness of AI-generated storytelling and gamified learning in EFL vocabulary acquisition has been underexplored. This study examines the influence of AI-generated storytelling and gamified learning on the vocabulary retention and engagement of intermediate-level EFL learners. Ninety participants were allocated among three groups: a control group that employed conventional vocabulary methods (e.g., rote memorization using...

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) redefines cognitive and social processes in learning environments, yet its psychological and contextual determinants in developing countries remain underexplored. This study investigates engineering students’ adoption of generative AI by integrating the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) to develop a unified socio-cognitive framework. Survey data from 378 Bangladeshi engineering students were analysed using PLS-SEM and multi-group comparisons to evaluate structural, mediating, and demographic effects. Results demonstrate that behavioural intention is the strongest predictor of AI use,...

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in application-based contexts has created the need for skilled workers with AI knowledge and competencies. In order to meet this demand, it is necessary to integrate AI into vocational education and training (VET) in Germany, for example in the form of an additional AI qualification. Such an additional qualification in the field of AI in the VET system is innovative and comparatively new. Therefore, this article explores the views of both teachers and apprentices regarding the requirements for an additional AI qualification, - perspectives which have not been sufficiently researched, yet. Results from a mixed-methods needs analysis based on...

Resumen:

Texto completo

Advancements in generative AI, such as large language models (LLMs), may serve as a potential solution to the burdensome task of essay grading often faced by language education teachers. Yet, the validity and reliability of leveraging LLMs for automatic essay scoring (AES) in language education is not well understood. To address this, we evaluated the cross-sectional and longitudinal validity and reliability of four prominent LLMs, Google's PaLM 2, Anthropic's Claude 2, and OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, for the AES of English language learners' writing. 119 essays taken from an English language placement test were assessed twice by each LLM, on two separate occasions, as well as by a pair of...
