The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultural Studies at the University of Central Oklahoma invites applications for a non-tenure track assistant professor in Spanish and Language Education to begin August 2027. This position is renewable and eligible for promotion.
The successful candidate will engage in teaching, service, and scholarly and/or creative activities as defined in the UCO Employee and Faculty Handbook. Teaching responsibilities include Spanish language courses, Spanish and Latin American culture, civilization, and literatures classes, and Methods of Teaching Foreign Language. The successful candidate will mentor Spanish and Language Education students.
As the language education specialist, the successful candidate will supervise teacher education candidates during student teaching, advise students on the Oral Proficiency Interview, support language club activities and events, participate in OFLTA (Oklahomans for World Language Teaching Association), and prepare accreditation reports as requested.
The teaching load is 24 credit hours (usually a 4:3 load) and includes elementary-level language courses, Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages, and upper-level courses in language, literature, and cultural studies that complement instructor expertise and departmental need. Duties include teaching day/evening courses in a face-to-face format, teaching online courses as needed, and supervising student teacher candidates, as well as service at the department, college, and university levels and an active program of research, scholarly, and/or creative activity.
Start date: August 2027.
The department promotes the study and teaching of second languages and the study of the literatures and cultures produced by the peoples of those languages. In addition to major programs in French, German, and Spanish and a minor in Japanese, it offers courses in Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Latin, and Biblical Greek, supports the training of future language teachers, sponsors community events and student clubs, and offers opportunities for faculty to lead study tours. The University of Central Oklahoma is located in Edmond, just north of Oklahoma City, and is Oklahoma's third largest public university.
An earned Ph.D. in Spanish or related field is required by time of appointment. Teaching experience in a K-12 setting is required for this position, with preference given to applicants with at least 3 years of K-12 experience. Teaching and departmental/school and university service is expected.
