The Department of World Languages and Cultures at UW-Whitewater seeks a dedicated educator, scholar and colleague to join our faculty. This position carries a 24-credit annual teaching load with an emphasis on high-impact instructional practices, student success, research, and professional service. The successful candidate will be able to teach professional Spanish and translation — including translation across languages — along with Spanish language and grammar courses for second-language learners, heritage speakers, and mixed classrooms as part of the Spanish major, the Spanish minor, the Professional Spanish minor, the Spanish BSE major and minor, and the broader World Languages and Cultures curriculum.

Course load: Deliver 24 credits of instruction per academic year in Spanish and World Languages and Cultures. The anticipated rotation includes translation coursework in Spanish and across languages (Introduction to Spanish Translation, and Translation and Interpretation in the World Languages); Spanish for the professions courses (such as Spanish for Business); Spanish Conversation; and Spanish grammar and language courses at any level from 141 through 326 as departmental need requires.

Research: Maintain an active scholarly agenda that contributes to the field of translation studies, professional Spanish, Hispanic linguistics, Heritage Spanish, or a related area of Spanish studies.

Service: Lead the department in developing a formal internship process and other career-oriented programming that connects World Languages and Cultures students with regional employers. Carry a regular departmental advising load and support student recruitment and retention in the Spanish and Professional Spanish programs.

The Spanish program enrolls approximately 50 majors and 150 minors and is the department’s largest program.

Contract start date: August 2027. UW System employees receive an excellent benefit package.

Required: Terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent) in Spanish, translation studies, Hispanic linguistics, or a related discipline by the time of appointment. ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2027.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching, experience with Canvas, and a record of scholarly achievement.
  • Expertise in translation and Spanish for the professions.
  • Experience navigating the changing artificial intelligence landscape as it applies to translation and language instruction.
  • Pedagogical expertise with both heritage Spanish speakers and second-language learners, including the ability to teach mixed classrooms.
  • Experience with high-impact practices such as community-based learning, undergraduate research, internships, or travel study.
  • Interest in developing new professional Spanish courses and in building partnerships with employers and other departments and colleges on campus.

Apply online.

Only complete application packages will be considered:

  • Cover letter/letter of interest
  • Statement of teaching philosophy
  • Curriculum Vita
  • Names and contact information for three professional references
  • Copies of unofficial graduate transcripts

Applications received by December 31st, 2026, are ensured full consideration.
