Contract Type: Fixed-term (one academic year)

This role is for a native Spanish speaker who wants practical classroom experience teaching speaking, exam preparation and cultural understanding to Sixth Form and Year 9 pupils, while also contributing to boarding-house life. This is a one-year post with the potential to extend to a maximum of two years.

About this role

You will support pupils to develop confident, accurate and fluent spoken Spanish, prepare for GCSE/A-level/IB oral assessments, and enrich language learning through cultural resources and extra-curricular activity. This position gives recent graduates or those exploring a career in education a structured introduction to classroom practice within a large Modern Languages team and a residential school setting.

What you'll be doing

  • Teach small groups (mainly Sixth Form) to prepare speaking exams: discussions, role plays, presentations, debates and article analysis.
  • Support Year 9 native-speaker groups and practise GCSE oral exam material with Under School pupils (Years 9–11).
  • Help Sixth Form students with essay structure, vocabulary and idiom where required.
  • Select, create and record listening and reading resources; contribute to departmental teaching materials.
  • Assess and monitor pupil progress in line with departmental policy; liaise with Head of Language, teachers and tutors.
  • Promote Spanish through displays, clubs, language societies, debating, films, plays and other cultural events.
  • Attend departmental meetings and contribute to extra-curricular language activities when agreed with the Head of Modern Languages.
  • Participate in agreed boarding-house duties (evening duties, overnight on-calls, weekend duties as specified) and provide tutoring within a House.

What we offer

  • Accommodation (furnished) during term and board provided via dining rooms.
  • Minimum 26 hours per week term-time (Mon–Sat pattern as timetabled).
  • Competitive contributory occupational pension scheme.
  • Cash Health Plan (+Medicash), personal accident insurance, Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Payment for eye tests and contribution towards corrective eyewear.
  • Death in service benefit (subject to scheme rules), school fee remission (subject to eligibility).
  • Membership of School Sports Centre; reduced subscription for 9-hole golf course.
  • Cycle to Work and salary sacrifice for electric vehicles (subject to eligibility).
  • Lunches during normal working day, free on-site parking, library access and invitations to school events.
  • Continuing professional development as part of the School’s talent management programme.

Essential

  • Native speaker of Spanish.
  • Degree-level education (or equivalent).
  • Confident and accurate oral and written Spanish.
  • Some awareness of GCSE and A-level curricula (IBDP awareness desirable).
  • Good communication, interpersonal and administrative skills; ICT competence.
  • Willingness to take part in boarding-house duties and co-curricular activities.

Desirable

  • Prior classroom or tutoring experience.
  • Experience preparing students for oral examinations and supporting differentiated learning.
