The Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Houston seeks a non-tenure track Professor of Practice in Spanish for the academic year Fall 2026–Spring 2027. The position includes teaching (75%) and administrative/service responsibilities (25%).
The candidate will primarily teach face-to-face undergraduate Spanish language courses (beginning through advanced levels), as well as courses that support the department’s curriculum and student success initiatives.
In addition to teaching, the Professor of Practice will play a key role in supporting the growth and sustainability of the Spanish program. Responsibilities may include coordination with language program instructors, mentoring students, contributing to program development and assessment, and student recruitment and retention efforts. The position requires strong organizational skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
The typical teaching load is a 4–4; however, two course releases (one per semester) will be granted to support administrative responsibilities.
The successful candidate will have taught Spanish at the college level for at least 3 years, with a preference for candidates who have experience in both second language and heritage language instruction.
Experience coordinating language programs is a plus.
Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Spanish, Hispanic Studies, or a closely related field is required.
