Merton College proposes to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in Spanish for the period 1 October 2026 until 30 September 2027.

The main duties of the post will be: to teach undergraduates studying Spanish for an average of 12 weighted hours per week in full term (approximately 8 contact hours per week, depending on group size), to share in the organisational responsibility and administration for undergraduate degrees involving Spanish, to provide study skills and pastoral support, and to take part in the undergraduate admissions exercise.

Teaching is required for the following papers:

(i) Prelims (first year) Papers II (Unseen Translation into English), III (Introduction to Hispanic Prose Texts) and IV (Introduction to Hispanic Poetry and Drama).

(ii) For the Final Honour School, period and special author papers in Early Modern Literature in Spanish, for Papers VII (Period of Spanish Literature 1492-1695) and X (Modern Prescribed Authors: Calderón, Cervantes, Garcilaso, Góngora, Quevedo, Sor Juana).

The successful candidate will have completed, or be about to complete, a doctorate in Spanish Literature. Proven ability to provide excellent small-group (tutorial) and class teaching to high achieving undergraduates, and an excellent understanding of, and ability to explain Spanish grammar are essential.
