Job Description

The Centre for Languages Culture and Communication (CLCC) at Imperial College is looking for a full-time Coordinator of Spanish to join the management team for Languages. As an experienced teacher of Spanish as a Foreign Language in higher education, you will join an established team of Language Coordinators who work on the I-Explore and Horizons undergraduate programmes as well as on our Imperial after:hours (adult education) programme. The role involves teaching undergraduate students from a scientific, technical, or medical background and leading a team of teaching fellows.

Reporting to the Languages Field Leader, you will have overall responsibility for the management of the Spanish IWLP provision, ensuring there is adequate professional teaching resource to meet all service requirements. The Language Coordinator is part of a team which contributes to the institutional Teaching & Learning Strategy by offering a high-quality language teaching service tailored to Imperial students’ needs and by implementing improvements and innovative proposals in the Languages Section of the CLCC.

Imperial is committed to providing an educational experience that empowers graduates to be leaders in their chosen careers and contribute meaningfully to society. Imperial Horizons is a well-established programme which is embedded within the curriculum as part of students’ degree programmes. The programme aims to put science in the context of the wider world and to develop interdisciplinary approaches to learning and thinking. This programme includes a range of modules in the fields of Languages, the Humanities and Social Sciences.

What you would be doing

  • Plan, organise and develop the teaching of the relevant language, including choosing, developing and updating course materials and syllabuses for the Spanish courses.
  • Maintain and develop the virtual learning environment for the language, providing guidance across the language team and leading the creation of material. Ensure the VLE’s capabilities are fully maximised to support teaching delivery and assessment, maintaining consistency across coursework, assessment, examinations, and generic resources.
  • Undertake teaching using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods including digital learning technologies.
  • Set and standardise examinations and assessment procedures in the relevant language. Manage examination processes, adhering to institutional QA expectations.
  • Assess the work (including examinations and coursework) and progress of students using appropriate methods and criteria.
  • Provide constructive and actionable feedback on course assessments within the University’s regulations and ensure results are recorded in pertinent online systems.
  • Source, nominate and liaise with the external examiner for the relevant language, including preparation of assessment samples in line with University regulations.
  • Line-manage and co-ordinate the work of all teaching fellows of the relevant language to deliver a quality service. Including, where appropriate, leading team meetings, performance management of staff, recruitment and selection, and staff development.
  • Represent and advocate for the Spanish team at internal meetings as required and attend University open days and events relevant to the provision.
  • Maintain and foster the development of contacts and collaborations with comparable language departments, centres, and other external bodies.

We are looking for an individual with proven competence in leading a language team in higher education. To be successful in this post, you will be able to work flexibly as part of a team in an open-minded and cooperative manner, with strong communication and organisational skills. This position will suit an individual with a high level of competency in Spanish (Foreign Language Education) and Leadership and an understanding of the needs of undergraduate students and the higher education sector.

You will have:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Spanish.
  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications and specific professional qualifications.
  • The capacity to work towards an appropriate teaching qualification if not already completed.
  • Extensive experience of teaching Spanish in the UK higher education sector.
  • Proven experience of course design and planning including syllabi, materials and assessment for the whole range of language levels (A1 to C1/C2) in different academic environments.
  • Experience of administration and academic management duties.
  • Demonstrable familiarity with a variety of student-centred strategies to promote and assess learners and to provide constructive feedback.
  • Well-developed knowledge of the higher education sector and current developments in Institution-Wide Language Programmes.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to providing constructive and actionable feedback on student assessments.
