We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as an Assistant Professor of Spanish beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year. The department seeks an energetic candidate to develop and teach Spanish linguistic courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, both in traditional and online environments. The selected applicant will support the development of the Spanish program, advise students and serve on program and department committees as needed. The successful applicant will be expected to develop a solid research agenda in their field.
Our department currently serves approximately 880 undergraduate and graduate students (including 51 at the graduate level). We are a dedicated team of 10 faculty members (6 tenured and 4 professional track), offering a wide range of courses primarily in face-to-face formats at both the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses.
Our academic programs includes a BA in Spanish and a Spanish Teaching Certification, while also providing a minor in Spanish for healthcare and a general minor in Spanish. At the graduate level, we offer a master’s program in Spanish and a graduate certificate in Advanced Placement Spanish Literature.
Minimum Qualifications
1) PhD in Spanish or closely related field (e.g., PhD in applied linguistics with 18 hours, Spanish language proficiency, PhD Hispanic languages and linguistics, etc. regardless, must have 18 graduate hours in Spanish).
2) Demonstrable potential for a strong research and publication record for tenure-track appointment.
3) Demonstrable potential for teaching excellence for tenure-track appointment.
4) Willingness to learn UTRGV’s online platform (Brightspace) and to occasionally teach online.
Preferred Qualifications
Grad Faculty Status: 1 peer-reviewed, scholarly publication in the area of course content within the past 5 years.
Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
