The Department of Romance Languages at Binghamton University is seeking to hire a lecturer in Spanish, beginning in August 2022. This is a full-time position (three-year contract) with possible renewal. The teaching load is three courses per semester with the option to teach online during the winter and summer interterm for additional compensation.
The instructor hired for this position will actively contribute to the introductory language sequence by teaching courses mostly at the elementary and intermediate levels. These courses are taught under coordination. Therefore, professionalism and collegiality are considered as important as enthusiasm for language instruction at the college level. Some of these courses meet three or four times a week, thus flexibility to respond to this scheduling need is required. Teaching courses at the advanced level is a possibility, contingent on departmental needs and curricular planning priorities.
Participation in departmental service is also expected. This typically includes student advising, organization of extracurricular activities, or participation in a committee. Therefore, the selected candidates should be enthusiastic about interacting with students outside the classroom and working with colleagues.
Moreover, the selected candidates should actively contribute to the University's mission of advancing a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, mentoring, and service, as well as through engagement with faculty, students, and staff.
Candidates should hold an MA or Ph.D. (or be ABD) in Spanish or other relevant fields, and be prepared to successfully teach language courses at the introductory and intermediate level, under the guidance of a coordinator and in close collaboration with colleagues. Experts in all fields are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with evidence of effective teaching at the university level. Applicants must have native or near-native fluency in both Spanish and English.
Interested candidates should upload their application materials to Interview Exchange. Please include a cover letter, CV, teaching portfolio (statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, student evaluations), and the name and contact information of two recommenders.
