The Department of World Languages & Cultures at Washington and Jefferson College is seeking applications for a full-time position for Senior Instructor / Instructor of Spanish beginning in mid-August 2025. The appointment is for three years, and the Instructor will be assessed annually by the Spanish Program to confirm continuation. After three years, the position may be renewed with administrative approval from Academic Affairs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach three undergraduate Spanish courses at the beginner or intermediate level or a combination of beginner and intermediate-level Spanish courses each semester. During fall semesters, the three courses will take place in the afternoon. Courses are taught in person, on campus, MWF.
- Stay current with developments in the field of Spanish Language and Culture, Second-Language Pedagogy, Second-Language Acquisition.
- Offer three office hours per week, one per hour taught.
- Work with Spanish team on syllabi that meet department and College standards.
- Prepare meaningful classroom experiences, which include a variety of pedagogical strategies, including mini lectures, discussions, tests and exams.
- Design, administer, and grade examinations.
- Submit grades, schedules and syllabi in a timely fashion.
- Reply to emails from students, the Department, and the office of Academic Affairs regularly.
Requisitos
Education
- Applicants should hold an MA or a higher degree in Spanish Literature or Culture (with training in Second-Language Pedagogy, Second-Language Acquisition), Second Language Pedagogy, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field.
Experience
- Multiple years of experience in teaching Spanish at an undergraduate institution in the U.S.
Qualifications
- Must have native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and demonstrate a native or near-native proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
- Must be able to work closely with the supervisor from the Spanish team while managing the courses independently.
- Must have excellent communication skills (oral and written), and cross-cultural skills.
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.
- Must have expertise in the use of instructional technology and communicative, proficiency-based, teaching methodologies.
- Must have the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
