The Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages is seeking to appoint a Departmental Lecturer in Modern Spanish Literature from 18 April 2022 until 10 March 2023.

The post will involve advanced teaching and independent academic research in the field of Modern Spanish Literature. The Departmental Lecturer in Spanish will contribute to the teaching of Spanish within the Sub-Faculty of Spanish by offering 16 hours of lectures or seminars over the course of the two terms. They will also be responsible during Full Term for providing approximately 8 hours a week of undergraduate tuition in Spanish literature and translation.

The successful candidates will be expected to give tutorials (small-group teaching, typically of 2-3 students), seminars, and translation classes to first-, second-, and fourth-year undergraduates, and may be required to teach postgraduate students. The undergraduate literature teaching involves tutorials and seminars on the set texts for the first-year examinations; tutorials and seminars in modern Spanish literature for second-years and finalists; and supervising extended essays. Undergraduate language teaching involves translation into English and some teaching of Spanish grammar.


Applicants must possess exceptional fluency in Spanish and the ability to teach it at undergraduate levels within the Oxford course and a good undergraduate degree in Spanish. Candidates will be expected to have submitted a doctorate in the field of Modern Spanish Literature by the date of application for the post, though those close to completion may be considered.
