This is a full-time non-teaching 12-month position with a starting yearly salary of $50,000.

The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral researcher position as part of an NSF funded project, led by Dr. Antje Muntendam. This project investigates the linguistic outcomes of language contact between Quechua and Spanish in Peru and Argentina, with a particular focus on intonation, and in the case of Quechua, its interaction with morphology. The project specifically examines the production and perception of questions in both languages. This interdisciplinary project uses a combination of (socio-)linguistic and psycholinguistic methods, including eye-tracking. The goal of the project is to shed light on the effect of linguistic and social factors on the outcomes of language contact.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Conduct field research on Spanish and Quechua in Peru and Argentina, using a combination of linguistic and psycholinguistic methods under the supervision of the PI
  • Analyze data from production and perception tasks, including eye-tracking experiments
  • Collaborate with the Principal Investigator (PI), undergraduate research assistants, and local research assistants in Peru and Argentina
  • Work with the team to disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences

Requisitos 

Required qualifications:

  • PhD in Cognitive Science, (Hispanic) Linguistics, Neuroscience, Psycholinguistics, Psychology, or a related field. Applicants must have met the requirements for the PhD by the time of appointment.
  • Background in language contact/bilingualism, phonetics/phonology, psycholinguistics, or sociolinguistics
  • Experience conducting field or lab-based research
  • Proficiency in Spanish and English
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Willingness to learn new skills or acquire technical and theoretical knowledge as needed. Training will be provided to help the successful candidate integrate into the project and develop any expertise necessary.

Desired qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Quechua
  • Experience working with bilingual populations and under-studied languages
  • Experience with programming and running eye-tracking experiments, as well as analyzing eye-tracking and intonation data (training will be provided if needed).
