The International Association for Language Learning Technology (IALLT) and the Japan Association for Language Education & Technology (LET) are pleased to announce the Call for Proposals for the 8th FLEAT (Foreign Language Education and Technology) Conference in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. 

FLEAT 8 will be sponsored by IALLT, LET, the National Foreign Language Resource Center (NFLRC) and the Center for Language and Technology (CLT) at The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

The deadline for submitting proposals is October 31, 2024. Questions regarding the program, proposals, or the submission process may be sent to the Program Chair, Amanda Romjue (programs@iallt.org).

SUGGESTED TOPICS
Although no technology conference is complete without demonstrations of the latest gadgets, software, and digital resources, the range of proposals being sought is quite broad. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Artificial Intelligence in Language Teaching, Learning, and Language Center Operation
  • Language Advocacy Using Technology, Social Media, and/or Multimedia
  • The Changing Landscape of Language Teaching and Learning
  • New Frameworks for Distance Education and Telecollaboration
  • Innovative Practices in K-16 Language and Cultural Learning
  • Technologies and Social Networks for Language Learning
  • Language Learning and Communities Outside the Classroom
  • Cultural Identities, Technology, and Language Learning
  • Best Practices in Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL)
  • Professional Development Solutions and Challenges
  • Language Center Design and Management 
  • Innovative Language Center Initiatives
  • Online and Hybrid Language Teaching and Learning
  • Augmented Reality, Virtual Environments, and Gaming in Language Learning
  • Ownership, Publication, and Use in Technological Environments
  • Legal Issues of Student Privacy and ADA Compliance
  • Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL)

SESSION TYPES
Workshops
(3 hours) provide an opportunity for hands-on exploration and application of real-world activities and/or strategies using instructional technology to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and proficiency growth in world languages. 

Panels (50 minutes) bring together participants working separately but in an area of common focus. Panels include topics in areas of research, theory, and practice. In order to allow time for audience questions and interaction, panels should include no more than four members. Panelists will be permitted to present remotely provided that logistical details are handled by members of the panel who will be attending the conference in person.

Presentations (25 or 50 minutes) highlight the work of individuals and small teams. Presentations should provide an introduction to a specific problem and a description/demonstration of a proposed solution. Presentations may be formal in nature (50 minutes) or presented in a more casual, conversational “quick talk” style (25 minutes). Presentations provide specific strategies and activities implementing instructional technology in world language learning contexts. Presenters should allow time for audience questions and interaction during the allotted time. 

Poster Presentations are intended to be highly interactive, with the opportunity for the presenter to exchange ideas one-on-one or in small groups with attendees during the designated time. Posters (digital or printed) showcase the implementation of instructional technology in world languages that demonstrates strategies, activities, student-generated products, and innovations. If your poster is digital, your laptop should be charged in advance and operated on battery power since electrical outlets may not be available. 

Exhibitor Sessions may promote a product or program for sale by presentation or demonstration through the lens of some pedagogical purpose. This should not equate to a sales pitch, but instead feature a product or program as it can serve the technology and language learning needs of participants.  

When submitting a proposal, you will sign in/create an account on the IALLT web portal and provide the information below:

  • Speaker Details: Name, email address, and affiliation (academic institution or business). All the presenters (including second and other additional presenters) are required to register and participate in the conference.
  • Session Type
  • Session Title
  • Abstract: No more than 200 words. This will appear in the conference app and also be read as part of the selection process for the conference.
  • Descriptive Tags: You will have the option to select up to three descriptive tags based on the suggested topics above.
