Resumen:

The transmission of Spanish among heritage speakers is shaped by communicative practices within the family, by their distribution across different geographical areas and the opportunities to use the heritage language in those settings and, finally, by the availability of educational programmes that reinforce the acquired competence. This article analyses how these three factors interact to support the maintenance of Spanish as a heritage language in Germany, the third-largest European country in terms of its heritage Spanish-speaking population. The study draws on demolinguistic data to reconstruct various speaker profiles and the linguistic environments in which they live and are educated, as well as a sociolinguistic survey designed to identify communication practices within households.

In recent years, Heritage Language Programs have been attracting more and more attention in the European academic and educational policy contexts. In Germany, many efforts are being undertaken to foster the teaching of heritage languages in schools. This paper provides an overview of the teaching of Spanish as a Heritage Language in Germany through the long-established Program ?Spanish Culture and Language Lessons? (Aulas de Lengua y Cultura Españolas) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education for school-aged Spanish heritage speakers. El presente estudio de investigación recoge los datos y opiniones de profesionales dentro del campo del español como lengua de herencia en Alemania y de dos expertos sobre la existencia o falta de formación específica en la intersección existente entre la competencia comunicativa intercultural y la enseñanza del español como lengua de herencia. Primeramente, es necesario una contextualización del ELH en Alemania y unos conocimientos sobre diferentes modelos de competencia comunicativa intercultural.
