The Department of Classical & Modern Languages in the School of Arts & Letters at Truman State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Spanish with a focus on Hispanic Linguistics to begin August 2022.

Responsibilities:  Teaching responsibilities include providing classroom instruction in lower and upper division Spanish curriculum, including courses in Spanish Phonetics and History of the Language.  Scholarly activity consistent with Truman’s teacher-scholar model is expected.  Additional duties include academic advising, mentoring of students in research and other experiences, and providing service to the department and University.


A Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics is required; ABD will be considered with Ph.D. completion required by August 15, 2022.

Applicants will be evaluated on:

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness in Spanish at the university level
  • Evidence of superior performance in graduate level courses
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish
  • Strong oral and written skills in English
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills
  • Compatibility with the department’s needs, including specialization in Hispanic Linguistics, and the ability to teach a translation course(s).
  • Commitment to the liberal arts and sciences as a teacher-scholar
  • Evidence of mentoring students in transformative experiences such as undergraduate research, service-learning, internships, study abroad and cultural activities.
