The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL) in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan seeks applicants for a full time Lecturer III position to begin August 29, 2022. This is a non-tenure track position with a university year appointment.
We are seeking a second-year Spanish Coordinator to oversee Spanish 231 Special Topics language courses. The Department envisions Spanish 231 Special Topics courses as an opportunity to blend language learning with content that aligns with LSA’s and RLL’s mission of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The coordinator will lead a group of instructors – other Lecturers and Graduate Student Instructors employed by RLL – and will be responsible for creating all the syllabi for each topic that will rotate every semester/academic year.
The Spanish 231 Special Topics Coordinator will closely mentor instructors as administrators and language educators through leading course meetings and workshops, creating common syllabi, providing sample classroom and assessment materials, and serving as a resource. The Spanish 231 Special Topics Coordinator will work closely with the team of Spanish coordinators and under the Director and Assistant Director of Elementary Language Programs in RLL regarding programmatic and curricular matters, and very closely with the 3rd semester Spanish 231 coordinator to align objectives and outcomes. In addition, the Spanish 231 Special Topics Coordinator will work closely with the coordinator of Spanish 232 Special Topics to discuss potential topics to offer and avoid repetition.
A typical full-time (100% effort) teaching load for a Lecturer III in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester, or the equivalent in other duties. The coordinator will receive a course release for every 10 sections coordinated in a given term.
Qualified candidates will have prior experience in administration and/or course coordination and 5 or more years of experience teaching Spanish at a U.S.-based university.
Familiarity with the communicative method of language instruction and prior experience teaching language via topics-based courses strongly preferred. Experience developing courses and materials related to themes of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, as well as training in the field of DEI strongly preferred. M.A. or Ph.D. in Spanish, Applied Linguistics, Language Pedagogy, or related field preferred. The successful candidate will be a dynamic teacher committed to excellence in both foreign language teaching and methodologies.
