The Department of Spanish at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in pre-Columbian and colonial Latin American textual and cultural production, beginning in August 2026. We invite applications from scholars who explore pre-modern and early modern cultural expressions, particularly those centered on indigenous languages and cultures, Afro-descendant traditions, or both. Ideal candidates will engage with textual sources (such as chronicles, codices, letters, legal documents, or religious texts) in dialogue with indigenous or Afro-descendant traditions, including visual arts, performance, or non-Western knowledge systems. We welcome diverse theoretical and methodological approaches, particularly those that foster innovative pedagogy and interdisciplinary connections to help undergraduate students explore the complexities of pre-colonial and colonial Latin America.

The successful candidate will regularly teach courses across the Spanish curriculum, including language courses at the introductory or intermediate level, as well as composition and conversation, culture, literature, and advanced seminars in their areas of expertise, all with a strong commitment to inclusive pedagogies. To support the department’s commitment to understanding multilingual realities of the Hispanophone world, the successful candidate will be encouraged to incorporate relevant languages beyond Spanish into their teaching and scholarship; proficiency in Portuguese or an Indigenous language is strongly preferred. The candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to interdisciplinary programs at the College, including Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies (LALC).

This position carries a 3-2 teaching load with a research leave prior to tenure review of either a full year at 80% salary or a semester at full salary, and generous sabbatical and fellowship leaves for tenured faculty. To enable a smooth transition to Holy Cross, new full-time tenure-track Assistant Professors receive start-up funding to support their research and professional development and have a one-course reduction in their first year of teaching (i.e., 2-2).

Applicants must have experience teaching undergraduate students and a strong commitment to teaching Spanish at all levels.

Ph.D. in Spanish, Hispanic Studies, Comparative Literature, or a closely related field whose research centrally engages with Spanish-speaking Latin America during the colonial period, completed by the time of appointment.

Native or near-native fluency in both Spanish and English. Departmental instruction is in Spanish, incorporating related languages as appropriate, while English is predominantly used for teaching, scholarly engagement, and service outside the department.

Demonstrated excellence in and strong commitment to teaching Spanish language courses at all undergraduate levels.

Evidence of a promising research agenda focused on pre-Columbian and colonial Latin American textual and cultural production engaged with Indigenous cultures, Afro-descendant traditions, and/or non-Western knowledge systems.

The College of the Holy Cross uses Interfolio to collect all faculty job applications electronically. Please submit all application materials to https://apply.interfolio.com/171910.

During the initial application stage, candidates must submit

  • a current curriculum vitae;
  • unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts;
  • a two-page statement of your teaching philosophy, including a brief description of how
  • you would teach an advanced undergraduate seminar on pre-Columbian and/or colonial Latin American textual and cultural productions;
  • a two-page research statement; and
  • three confidential letters of recommendation

Semifinalists will be contacted to submit
